With that charger rated at IP65 it must be VERY tough indeed.

Seems to be excellent value for money.

Hi Cas,

Unfortunately we have had a price increase due to rising costs, the full moon not appearing when it should, Jacobs has increased the price of its coffee, etc. The price now, therefore, is R899.00 + shipping! :mrgreen:

Bretton, the BX-1 is R395.00 plus R50.00 Speed Post. The new BX-1M now has a memory function and retains its previous settings in the event of a power failure, whereas the older ones had to be manually reset.

I'm not going to touch those cheapy manual chargers anymore... yes I own one... over the Easter weekend, an friend of mine's sister had a disasterous experience with one of these cheapies...

While visiting at friends they got a call to say there house is on fire, specifically the garage... with a vehicle inside... her husband had left the vehicles battery on charge, they went out... I take it something went wrong, maybe the battery exploded(overcharge??) or there was a short in the charger... end result is a destroyed car and major damage to their house and belongings...

So I need to buy a Benton!

And by cheapy manual chargers you are not referring to the Benton charger (just wanted to clarify that) :)

F_D, I've been reading up a little about the differences between the BX1 and 2... from what I can see/read, the main difference is that the BX2 can charge 24V as well as usual 12V, and therefore has a uprated PSU over the BX1...

For my needs, keeping Bolts 12V battery is good work, is the BX2 needed or will the BX1 suffice?

BTW the pricing you are offering these units for is excellent, I've done a minor comparison!

Main differences between the two chargers:

BX-1

* 5-Step
* Max charging rate 3.5A
* Suitable for batteries from 1.2 - 120 A/Hr rating

BX-2

* 7-Step
* Max charge 12v/7A, or 24v/3.5A
* Suitable for batteries from 14 - 230 A/Hr rating at 12v, - 120A for 24v batteries
* Built in 12v 5A power supply
* attempts to recover sulphated batteries

These chargers are primarily designed as Maintenance Chargers and can therefore be left permanently connected to a battery. They are not designed for 'quick' charges, but do not do too badly in that aspect either.

Mr. B, are you suggesting I should perhaps increase my prices... ;) I do not want you to feel 'done in' by a cheap charger! :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

The rason for the low pricing is that we do this as a service for fellow off-road users. Commercially, we sell these chargers at a higher price, yet they still remain bargains!

Do you possibly have an inverter which can supply power to this Benton? Jip a good quality inverter will be expensive ....

I am thinking of using an inverter to "drive" this charger when driving - thus a DC-to-dc charger setup.

BUT when near 220V I can just plug the Benton into mains power.

Alternatively, can you recommend a good dc-to-dc charger ?

PS - does the shipping price in the first post still apply - SpeedServices has just increased their fees by 20%. :(

Hi Chris,

Benton do not currently have a DC-DC charger, although I have emailed them concerning the need for something like this. The chances are that in time they might well consider this option.

I lent Bennie a charger to use when he did the tour with Mac last year, he tried running it on a normal MSW inverter but this did not apparently work well, so it seems one would require a Full Sine Wave inverter - which is an expensive item.

C-Tek have a DC-DC charger, but it is not cheap. I have not yet seen the unit but read about it on their website a while ago.

I was not even aware that SS had increased their rates...!!!! But we bought an amount of their plastic pre-paid bags a couple of weeks ago at the old rate and so will stick to the existing rates until we run out of these. After that... well, we'll see what they charge.

SS increased on 1 April (NO joke)

We send a range of packets, some 1kg, more 2kg and the bulk being 3kg.

My wife collected a booklet showing the new tarrifs. The last two years their increases were around 8%, this time 20+% The R86 package will now cost you R105.

It will charge it and also attempt to recover it, but recovery depends pretty much on how far gone the battery is to start with.

The charger needs a minimum starting voltage of some 10v or so before it commences charging, but there are various way of doing this.

Cassie, yes, I never mentioned it however because I've never had a chance to actually test it ;) :mrgreen:

By using the "Boost" mode, the charger will force a high-rate charge through the battery for a few hours and then revert to a normal pulsing charge as soon as the battery has picked up sufficient charge.

Clever charger, this!

My mate in Witbank always borrows mine; now I can get him his own (and I can try it out as well :wth: :thumbup: )
Thank you

The Charger comes complete with two sets of leads that connect to it via a quick-connect plug. The first set is fitted with eye-lugs and these can be permanently affixed to your 'Lux, the connector stick out the under the bonnet (of the SFA & IFS, anyway) and one simply plugs the connector into the charger.

The other set of leads is fitted with crocodile clips for charging any other battery.

Here are some more specs of the charger:

BENTON BX-2 CHARGER

1. Diagnosis & Recovery:

As soon charging instruction is given to the charger, the unique diagnostic function automatically checks status of battery (detects voltage). If a deeply discharged battery’s voltage is over 4.5V±0.5V (for 12V battery) of 16V±0.25V (for 24V battery), charger begins pulse charging with 3 high current and 1.5A low current to recover it, which terminates when voltage reaches to 10.5V±0.25V (for 12V battery) or 21V±0.25V (for 24V battery). At this stage of if voltage of a battery is over 10.5V±0.25V (for 12V battery) of 21V±0.25V (for 24V battery) at the beginning of the process, the charger skips pulse charging and it switches over to pre-selected charging mode.

2. Bulk:

80% of energy is returned in this phase of charging. Here charger performs in multi-stages:
For 24V battery
a) High Rate Charging: Charger delivers constant current of 3.5A until the voltage reaches to 25.6V
b) Medium Rate Charging: Charger delivers constant current of 3.0A until the voltage reaches to 28.2V at which point the charger switches to Absorption phase.
For 12V battery
a) High Rate Charging: Charger delivers constant current of 7.0A until the voltage reaches to 12.8V
b) Medium Rate Charging: Charger delivers constant current of 5.0A until the voltage reaches to 13.9V, at this level constant current is 3.5A until voltage reaches to 14.0V. Finally charger delivers 3.0A current until voltage reaches to 14.1V at which point the charger switches to Absorption phase. Since current is not delivered at highest constant level, BENTON BX-2 charger will minimize the heating up of the battery, and hence will eliminate the build up of gases. This ensures more efficient and safer performance.

3. Absorption:

Use of a constant high current for extended periods of time risks gassing the battery. Therefore a constant low charging current is given at 1.0A to raise voltage from 28.2V to 28.8V (for 24V battery) and 14.1V to 14.4V (for 12V battery). In this phase complete charging up to almost 100% is achieved. Charger switches to trickle charge phase after sensing that the battery is truly fully charged.

4. Trickle Charge:

Battery is fully charged and ready to use. The battery will signal to the charger and will only take enough current to sustain small loads such as alarms etc of current leaks in the vehicle wiring circuit. Very low current of 200mA is given to the battery. When voltage drops below 25.6V (for 24V battery) of 12.8V (for 12V battery), monitoring circuit senses that battery needs more current to maintain its charge than available in trickle charge phase. The charger switches to maintenance charge phase.

5. Maintenance Charge:

As charger continuously monitors the terminal voltage in order to determine if a maintenance charging should be initiated. If the battery is loaded and/or terminal voltage falls below 25.6V (for 24V battery) of 12.8V (for 12V battery), the charger starts maintenance charging pulse at constant 1.0A until voltage reaches to 28.8V (for 24V battery) or 14.4V (for 12V battery). Now maintenance charging is discontinued. Cycle of trickle charging and maintenance charging is repeated indefinitely to keep battery in good condition when it is not in use and enables charger to be left connected indefinitely.

6. Supply 13.6V:

BENTON BX-2 charger provides a constant voltage at 13.6V and current up to 5A. This is suitable for maintenance of 12V battery using float charge approach at 100% of charge. BENTON BX-2 battery charger is also used as a power supply with maximum capacity of 13.6V/5A. In this mode spark free function is inactivated. However reverse polarity protection function still works. It has electronic overload protection, which activates if output voltage from the charger falls below 4.5V and current to around 6A (max).

7. Boost 16V:

To recover severely discharged 12V batteries this mode is useful. High voltage (17V max) at 1.5A is applied for a maximum period of 3 hours. At finish of this stage it would switch to normal charging setting (14.4V).

Niel, I have been trying to source a supplier for the plug, but have not had any luck. I have them for the BX-1, but they do not fit the BX-2.

But I will keep on looking because I need some of these for myself as well.

My pleasure Andre! Of course, the fact that we closed for the Christmas break on Friday probably spurred me on a bit ... ;)

Enjoy the charger!
