Hi All
Just to give you guys and gals some info. The site was down for a few hours due to Hurricane Sandy knocking out connectivity lines to the data centres where our forum is hosted. All seems to be back to normal.

Pretty quick response time from the service provider. Not bad at all!

Some more info from the service provider:
Dear Customer,
As you will be aware, Hurricane Sandy is currently impacting on the US east coast. Official states of emergency have been declared across the region, and mandatory evacuations ordered.
During the storm's progress, utility power to the datacenter facility was lost, and transfer to generator power failed, impacting core infrastructure availability. Despite taking significant measures to prepare for the storm it took additional time for personnel and material resources required to resolve the problem to be engaged, and therefore service restoration was delayed.
Service has now been fully restored to all customers but currently remains at risk of further disruption.
At this moment there remains a high risk to human life, with news reports already indicating at least 16 fatalities in the New York area. We are committed to maintaining normal service throughout these difficult circumstances and will do everything we can to keep your servers running smoothly. Our thoughts and best wishes are with all of those customers affected by this.

I tried connecting this morning and suspected something like this.... I'm quite surprised that they still fix it so quickly with all the power failures over there...

Daai sal ons met ons service provider moet uitklaar. Die ironie van die hele storie is hulle sit in Europa

The forum is a global thing; we sit in SA, the service provider is in the UK and the server is in the USA
I agree about having it in SA. Actually they must build those huge data centres in SA because we have the most stable climate.
Unfortunately SA shoot themselves in the foot with expensive bandwidth and then of course the government is not as stable as the climate.
If SA hosting was not that ridiculously expensive I would host it in SA anytime but a true SA server that size will cost me ten times the price than having it in the USA.

We all need a little 'reminder' from time to time, otherwise our conceited pride gets the better of us.

I heard on the radio yesterday while they were talking to a SA lady who stays there. She said it happened at night and everywhere you saw the blue lights as power lines made shorts and transformers exploded.
So I thought, DuH, if you know this mega storm is heading your way and it is going to destroy everything, why don't you switch off the power after the first short. Now they allow power lines to be melted and transformers to be blown up. Or am I missing something somewhere?

I had very similar thoughts, Pieter ..... surely there would be breakers installed throughout their grid to protect the supply equipment and cables as well as for general safety.
We have it every now and then (last week again) that with heavy winds there is sometimes a power outage as cables sway into each other or are damaged by trees .... trips a sector of the local grid without further disruption or damage. We have transformer houses for each sector ..... not mounted on poles as it seems they do all over in the US.

And the way we use to do it in South Africa 50 years ago

Sandy was very mad. But shows, you do not need weopons to cripple a country.

Must be a lot more than 50 years ago if they ever did that here, Pieter. I dare say, I'm past that age :shifty: , and I've never seen anything other than transformer houses in municipal areas until rather recently, where they have made use of all-weather units that are palisaded off on the ground.
Pole mounted transformers are still used by Eskom in rural areas, but that makes sense since users are spread out thinly. Even those aren't mounted on a single pole, but between two braced poles ... never seen or heard of one of those falling over.

Mmmmm....We know the AMERICAN way of thinking, they always want to be different since the days of Napoleon.
Thier switching, distribution policies, regulations and laws seems to be a problem for them during disasters.
But ja, what they have now is not nice, and how prepared are WE for an emergency,disaster........
