ID the rails

Post by Traveler »

Some identification skills please.

These are the rails on my Hilux, and I need to fit either load bars (prefer), or a roofrack so that I can fit my Technitop RTT to my Hilux.

What roofrack will fit these rails?? :?: :?: :?: :?:

Heinrich, fit the Frontrunner .... you won't be sorry! (sorry to disagree, Mark  )

Unless of course you have the equip and skills to weld aluminium, then you could make your own. I would'nt use mild steel ... a lot heavier and will add substantially to the load that you intend using up there, further raising your COG. After the cost of steel and galvanising, not to mention labour, you would'nt be too far off the cost of an alu carrier which would most probably look a lot better too and they are very functional. If you have a galvanised mild steel carrier and the galvanising is chafed through ... the resultant rust would be a problem besides leaving brown stains on your cab paintwork (and elsewhere when you shjit yourself for not going the alu route! :D: )
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Ek dink jy verstaan my mis :D: ... I'm not referring to differences between FR & Outback ... I'm talking about building your own carrier as you suggested .....

Dankie Mark, ek sal Saterdag nog so bietjie verder kyk. Dan sal ek kan besluit of ek wil koop of bou.

Andy, I only want to fit a set of load bars so that I can fit my RTT to the Hilux. I've got access to a welder that can weld nearly any kind of metal, and my own welder can weld mild and stainless. Powdercoating is no problem since my wife works for a company that manufactures the powders.

However I've looked at a number of the physical bars, and not the mounts, and all of them are substantial steel bars and surprised me with their weight.

Do you think a set of aluminium bars will carry the tent?

But I'll give Frontrunner a call they are about 10 minutes from the office, I can also visit them.

Thanks for everybody.

If you're only talking load bars and not complete carrier unit, then just go the mild steel way ...... alu is strong and depending on the material profile and gauge will carry the RTT, but just load bars is not really worth the cost difference.

The plan is purely a set to carry the tent.

I'm considering the option of MAYBE later on having a full on carrier installed on the canopy (but then I need to go the route of having the canopy strengthened). Afterall how much more do I want to take along than what I can fit into my trailer?

Looking at those pictures I should just build the brackets, and now I see it is rather easy, and make the bars from channel sections. And have it all powdercoated the same grey as the bumper and the rocksliders.

I would seriously look into making your own as front runner sell load bars with the feet for around R2k.

For sure you could make something work for less than that. Perhaps just some rectangular tubing for both the feet and the load bars.

Could do that as well.

Was thinking of taking a length of channel profile and then cutting the legs to an angle of 60deg, and those legs then going into the feet that can be sections of flatbar. Plenty ideas have been springing to mind.

George, that is much more than what the steel will cost you if you did a few sets.

Hi Heinrich,

Did you make a set up for yourself? I need some too, but am a bit cash strapped to buy a new set.

Johan, I went to Fintastic, Bud has a huge amount of ex Frontrunner stock. I bought 4 brackets and two loadbars from him last Saturday everything cost me R900-00. I paid R500 for the four brackets and R400 for the two loadbars. Which worked me out less than what making them would have cost.

I must say it was a pleasure fitting it all. Really easy to put on, and once it was on I realized just how sturdy the Frontrunner design is. It looks very good, and it is the low profile setup, so it literally clears the roof just enough for my quarter drive socket and ratchet to assist in installing the setup. If you look carefully at this picture you can see the rails, brackets and bars.

Have a word with him, Bud Morris O11 6O9 692four
