LA Sport - Long range tank

Post by oxydog »

I'm considering fitment of LA Sport's 70l long range tank to my '06 4.0 V6 D/Cab. Any positive/negative commentary on this specific product will be much appreciated. I've heard people complaining about leaks on long range tanks - not specifically on LA Sport's product.

Also, I understand that I will lose some ground clearance by installing it above the spare wheel - how much do you lose? In other words: How much will it affect the vehicle's off-road ability? (Keeping in mind that I still have Bees, my trusty '98 2.8D SFA D/Cab for doing RDW Jamborees, doing obstacles etc, and that Bees II, the 4.0 on which the tank will be fitted, will be used for traveling through Africa, and driving me to work and back).

Hi Jarus.
I have read a few issue regarding the fuel pump. Apparently when they drill the hole in the main tank the metal bits can destroy your fuel pump.Just find out about that.
For overlanding the height should be fine

Thanks George, I'll be sure to mention that to them. LA Sport is a very reputable supplier, so I'm sure they'll take care when doing the installation.

I heard that you get in serious trouble when you fill up and did not budget for the extra 70 litres.

I will watch the answers closely because I already have the tank I must just decide wether to fit it or not, the loss of clearance on the back is my biggest concern.

As ek eendag my waentjie upgrade, sal ek verseker die carriers oorweeg!

Uit ons trips in die verlede weet ek nou al dat ek nie sommer die slider hoef uit te trek as die sleepwa nog gehaak is nie - mens moet net slim pak!

I've fitted a spare wheel lock over the weekend, but only now realise that it might have to be removed when the long range tank is fitted - anyone done this before?

Now that is a bit of a problem, cause the pin (assuming you fitter the long pin type), now you amy have to look for a different method of securing the wheel....?

I've also heard of tanks not been cleaned properly after all the drilling is done. This leading to premature failure of the HP fuel pump, which, on the 4L V6 is not cheap. Some 4L V6 have experienced engine surge problems as well, related to a damaged fuel pump.

There is a relatively easy solution but you will need someone with some fabricating skills.

1. Construct a tank that will take the place of the bulky rear silencer.
2. Replace the oem silencer with a smaller silencer further forward. You could fit a resonator at the rear should the noise be too much
3. The tank should have a 45 deg bevelled edge at the bottom running the length of the tank so that the pipe can come through and clear the driveshaft
4. You will need to modify the filler neck so that a pipe can run at an angle to fill the auxillary tank. Dont forget an adequately sized breather pipe 20-25mm to prevent air locks when filling up.
5. You will need to fit a fuel pump in the aux tank to feed the main tank once it has reached the minimum level. Fit a switch in the cabin
6. You could also fit a fuel gauge to this tank if you wanted
7. I reckon this could give you an extra 40-50 lt's. Plus you would still have your spare in its place

Just a thought. still want to do mine this way

Thanks Dylan, that sounds like a plan as well.

I spoke to the guys at LA Sport regarding the metal bits in the fuel line. They said that it's not really a concern, because:
• The hole drilled in the main tank is very small and care is taken to not let any bits fall in unnecessarily.
• Should anything find its way into the tank, the inline filter will catch all debris on its way to the system.

Apparently, they have a contract with a club where they fit up to 20 tanks a month, and haven't had any problems with debris damaging the engine or any part thereof.

It should take anything from 5-10 minutes. If it is much longer than that you have a air lock

maybe air-lock is not the right word, rather you breather have some restriction. The fuel needs to push out the air at a steady rate.If the air flow is restricted it takes longer to fill because the fuel struggles to push the air out.
Hope it makes sense.i had the same problem on my previous van.i took it back to them and they made some adjustments to the breather pipe and then it was a lot better.

Ah, yes, that makes perfect sense. No, it didn't take THAT long; I'm just not used to waiting for more than 5 minutes or so. Probably took around 8 minutes.

Dis hoe ek dit uitgewerk het! Omtrent 2 liter oor (jy't 150 ingegooi) x 7.5 = 15 km!

Daai brandstofverbruik laat my nou beter voel oor myne op die 4.0 V6: 6.6 km/l as ek gelaai is en sleepwa trek.

Wraggies waar jy is reg..

My gemiddeld is uitgewerk oor 50 000km wat insluit 'n Namib trip van 6 dae in die sand. 3 Mosambiek trips en redelike baie ander 4x4.
