Took a chance and it paid off
Hi guys,
I was at the begining of Sept in the market for buying a rooftop tent, after a lot questions on many forums I received mixed responses. Seems that it is similiar to a fridge freezer discussion.
After a lot of searching I came accross the Feather lite tent from Frontrunner, by more than R1000 cheaper than any other. During my research the owners of canvas were worried about the "nylon" material of the tent. I contacted 3 or 5 owners of the Feather lite and even went to look at one of the tents on a family friend's Pajero.
Well needles to say we decided to take it. Got a great deal at front Runner through my Toyota dealer and fitted the tent for R6500...
I can now proudly say that the tent went through it s 1st trip with no hassles (KNP end Sept) and is heading for the next trip this weekend on the 4x4 weekend at Loskop Country...
If you are in the market, keep this tent in mind, the difference in weight is huge, price is good, durability in the wet and wind great...
Very happy owner

Henk, this is good news! Please post photos as soon as you can with the tent folded and open. This is high on my list of priorities as well.

Re: Took a chance and it paid off
I was looking at normal ground tents recently... was thinking of rooftop, but the extra drag and the fact that Andrew dude from 4x4communty said it offers better safety, but does suffer in the winds being high up
We went camping one year easter at De Dam, when the cape doctor made a turn, with full force. We had one of them camp master ground tents... firstly although it says water proof, if the wind blows the tent against the matress, the water someone comes thru, and you land up with wet blankets... then the wind really started howling and we had to throw the tent flat for fear it is going to be ripped apart... luckily we had two tents, so the other one we pitched behind a friends house he has there...
Thru all this we saw all the nylon tents taking alot of strain and being dismantled.. the only nylon tent that stood the test was there was a tent shaped like a army barracks - like half oil drum, and the canvas tents. Canvas tents did not even move...
This is why I rather going for a canvas ground tent once I managed to save up the R8000+ needed for one of them babies, but then you know you have a tent for 20yrs plus if well loooked after

Remember most rooftop tents have a rigid frame and the design is such that wind would not blow it around like some of the flimsy nylon tents.
