Evening all

I have a 60L water tank permanently mounted in my vehicle with a small 12v pump to get a decent pressure when needed.

How does one make sure all the water is out the tank when not in use. Or do you Have to steralize the tank before one uses it again.
Old water causes a lot of issues with disease and such.

Where is the tank mounted? Does it have a drain plug and if so, is it accessible?

Pumping or syphoning won't get all the water out, so if you're unable to drain it completely you might have to resort to using a tiny amount of Chlorine or bleach prior to using the tank again.

none of the commercial tanks drain 100%.

fair to assume you will always have a few liters of water left in the tank.

I fitted a T-section between the tank and pump, with a tap to drain the tank. Between trips I would leave this tap open (for a day or two) so it could drain as much as possible. The week before a trip I would add about 20 liters, drive a day or two, then drain again. Repeat this 2 or 3 times. Might even add some Milton for the second rinse. Then fill it for the next trip.

+1 on the Milton, was told the same thing by Conqueror when I got the trailer; apparently one could use whiskey as well....guess it would have to be cheaper than Milton to even consider LOL

The whiskey is a good idea. But you then leave it filled permanently. Just my sure the dilution is good. I suggest 50ml whiskey to every 200ml of water[FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]

Ok so treating the small amount of water left over seems to be the way to go.

AFAIK no new water are being manufactured??

Thus the 'old' water argument does not hold much water!

dont want to pour cold water on your thoughts ...

But each and every plant breaks water down into gasses ...

And each time your car starts up magic happens and water comes out the exhaust ...

Dont want to spew hot air, but you need some of this fresh water, without the smelly hot exhaust gasses in the water tank.

and to keep us from drowning, please feed your old water to the plants ...

Hehehe...almost too hard to swallow!

There are many many threads on "smells" in water tanks, and the various tips and tricks to keep the tank water from smelling ....


And then a farmer pointed out that their fresh farm water does not pick up smells in the plastic tanks ....

makes you think of all the chemicals we drink in town ....

Not to speak of all the "impurities" and bacteria!

We had a sample of the farm spring water tested, as well as a sample of the towns main water ...

Let's just say the client opted for spring water

No doubt!

Hence the reason we have a 5 stage filter in the kitchen....Pta water TDS 334(not bad compared to others), filtered water +-32 TDS. Same system used by the Voetspore team.

Would love to add one to the trailer but the usage doesn't warrant the cost

I use this one ......

I have a 55l plastic water tank installed in my hilux 4x4 camper in which I always have water in various quantities as I generally top before a small trip.
I use a disinfectant/sterilizer which prevents most germs and bacteria to harm the water and treated water is still good for 24 months using this product.
I buy the sterilizer from Outdoor Wharehouse for about R40 for a 300ml bottle which treats about 300l.I just add a few ml to the tank each time I top up and have not had any issues with the water.Bonus is the additive is also tasteless.The product is called AQUA ...... (Sorry I cant think of the complete name but ask at the counter and I,m sure the staff will be able to assist you)

I had previously experienced a very plasticy taste to the water even after numerous methods of washing and rinsing the tank using many different additives until I realized the taste was coming from the plastic pipe feeding from the tank to the tap.I replaced the pipe with white plumbing piping and this sorted the problem out.

Just a thought, sounds bad but i think it will work.
When you think the tank is empty, buy a pack of tampons tie them together then onto a longer piece of rope and drop them into the tank.keeping one end of the string rope hanging out, After driving around for a bit they should soak up all of the excess water. just a thought.
