Hi Stefan

Spartan on the forum has a Toy Stallion with a 4y engine, though I would not know if it is the old or the new version (if any different at all), I think he'll be able to give you direction. The 2y I had just kept on going and I think your dad's truck is the same, it's a Toy remember?

Hmmmm difficult one... my opinion on Korean vs Recon Original:

If you have access to a honest, knowledgable mech, I would acquire and rebuild a 4Y, but if the 2nd hand original 4Y is too stuffed, it could easily cost you 10K to recon, if not a little more... a decent recon, with new pistons, std sleeved bore, new timing chain, new water pump and recon'd head...etc. should set you back 6.5 to 8K... you must insist on original Toy rear main and timing cover seals!

If you don't know a decent mech to do the rebuild or can't find a decent 2nd hand Toy 4Y, then the Korean 4Y is the way to go...

On the head retorquing issue, the okes that sell the Korean 4Y's say torquing the head after 1000km is not needed, but we've learnt very quickly that this is in fact not the case... ala DadzToy ...a re-torque at 1000km is essential... then check the torque every 10000 or 20000km... again if you can afford to... fit an original Toy rear main and timing cover seals, even if you decide to fit a Ching Chong motor from China!

Yes, Mr B you be right, but a reconned Jap 4Y will last you 300 000km's where even a Korean 4Y wont last more that about 80 000 kms.. Now go and do the math..

Yes we had this discussion before. There is no korean motor. There are a few different chinese motors thow. (seems that commercial motors sells the beter one) There are a few gents on this site using this chinese 4y without any problems. Im using one, and with the EFi, had no problems yet, and the motor runs smooth.

Torqued the head once on 2000km and that was it.

In the end its your choice.

What happend to the old motor?

I bought a Chinese/Korean 4Y from Midas a few years back. It had an excellent finish, compared to the ones they sold a couple of years later, which were somewhat cheaper and had a terrible finish on the mouldings. At the same time, I had the original 4Y overhauled at a cost of R1000 more than I paid for a brand new engine. I trust the new engine more than the overhauled one, but this is because I do not know what spares were used by the engine rebuilders, in spite of my request that they only use genuine Toy parts.

In short - if you have a reliable engine builder (hello, Hoppy!  ) you can elect to have your engine rebuilt. If you do not have a reliable workshop doing the work, rather buy a new engine. It's cheaper and will last you at least close to 200,000km. I did have the head torque checked on mine after about 3500km and it was perfect.
