Front Axle Pot

Post by Henry »

On the front axle where the wheel swivel there is what I know the "pot" with a filler plug on top. With what do you fill this pot and how much ? Is it grease or oil ? I believe this is where the cv joint is situated. I am planning to replace all the seals and bearings and just wanted to know the lubrication required here.

Do you mean this plug?

I topped it up with CV grease.

Constant Velocity Joints
Constant velocity joints are usually used on front wheel drive cars, some 4 wheel
drives and rear wheel drive cars with independent rear suspension. Our prime
recommendation for constant velocity joints is Castrol SBX2, Castrol BMX2,
Castrol LMM and Agri Bortax may also be used. Virtually all manufacturers
recommend grease containing solid lubricants Castrol SBX 2 offers the best
combination of adhesiveness, base oil viscosity, melting point, extreme pressure
and antiwear additives.

I've never stripped mine. Just topped up when I bought the vehicle.

I just pumped in some CV grease with a grease pump. Not sure how much, but I would not fill it
up. When the joint moves, the grease has to be displaced somewhere.

Have a look here for some info: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenan ... olid_axle/
