22R clutch replace

Post by HiluxJunkie »

Hi;

I need to replace the clutch. Midas quote R865.00 for a LUK kit with clutchplate, pressure plate and thrust bearing. Is this a good product at a good price?
Will the standard toolbox with sockets, spanners, beer etc be ok. Any tricks in doing the job ?

Phoned Toyota. They quote R973. According to the salesman it is a LUK with Toyota stickers. So I think it is ok.

You are going to have to either drop the gearbox(with a gearbox jack or the like...), or pull the engine(block and tackle, engine hoist, etc.), will require a steady supply of beer! Once the engine/gearbox is out, replacing the clutch is simple. While you are at it check the rear crank seal and the gearbox seal in the bell housing. If there are any signs of leaking replace them while the gearbox/engine is out of the way. It's really annoying to put it all back together only for one of these seals to start leaking!

Toyota quoted me about a month ago and if I remember correctly the two seals adds up to R450.

Also make sure the flywheel is still OK if the surface is uneven rather have it skimmed then sitting with a shuddering clutch.

And rebleed the clutch system replacing it with new DOT 4 brake fluid, check that the master cylinder and slave cylinders are not leaking, if so, replce with new, not just the internal seals.

Hi HiluxJunkie,

First off, don't use pirate seals, the rear main one has a bad habit of starting to leak after 1500km's, ask me I know :shock: !
IIRC, the original rear main seal was about R90, and the gearbox seal was R50 or so. You will have to drain the gearbox oil to replace the gearbox seal. Removing the housing that the rear main seal sits in can be a pain, because the housing has some sump bolts in it, so the sump gasket often gets damaged when removing the housing,this is on the 4Y, but the 22R should be the same. Be very careful when inserting the new seal into the housing, it very easy the damage the lip or warp it.

Thanks for all the tips you guys.

You gave me a lot of work!!! But I rather do it it all together now while I am at it.

Looks like that case of beers is turning into a keg of beer........

Just remember to mark the ends of the gearbox with bright letters to remind you which needs to be connected to the engine cause after you drank the Keg while servicing the clutch, you might have difficulty remembering which end is the right end. :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:
