Chassis galv or spray

Post by dustbuster »

Hi thought I would ask which is the best way to sort out my chassis, there is no rust on it luckily but does need some attention.
Should I sandblast it then get it acid washed then hot dipped galvanized or just sandblast and the re-spray it?

Will hot dip galv damage it at all friend says it might warp it? I know I will have to re-tap all the bolt holes or put bolts in the holes before it gets dipped

Hot dip will not warp it. If your galvaniser is diligent, he will treat the threaded holes / riv-nuts before galvanising so that it doesn't 'take' in the treated threads and you don't have to re-tap them (you might just have to 'clean up' some of the mounting surfaces a little if they're a bit rough). Clean out what you can if there is dirt and grime inside the rails, but they will acid dip it first anyway.

Far better than spraying, and not much more expensive, especially if you take your labour into account.

If however you intend to paint it after galvanising instead of just leaving it raw, tell your galvaniser of your intentions so that he does not dip it in a pacifier after the hot dip. You should in any event still use a galvanising cleaner before painting with an etch primer (NOT water based) .... red oxide still works well, but there are some that are specifically formulated for application to zinc

;-)

No man, just leave it as is after galvanizing - looks great!

The best thing for the bolt holes is wooden dowels. Just smack the appropriate size dowel in the holes ie. 8mm hole: 9mm dowel It must just be tight. You can clean them afterward with the correct tap.

Not sure if the dowel will work, Dylan ... it might, but it'll burn up in seconds. The local guys once told me what they do and it works .... I've never had issues. Can't remember what they do for the internal threads, but the external ones they just put some plain masking tape. Of course it burns away immediately, but the residue that it leaves on the threads is not removed by the surface flux in the dip tank and so the zinc doesn't coat them. The same principle is used for the internal threads ... damn! Wish I could remember what they told me. ;-)

If its for a older shape land cruizer then its a bad idea. The chassis is made to twist when off roading and galvanising will make it to riged. So when it does eventually get to a point of twisting it cracks the galvanising and rusts the chassis at that point.

Too late I know, but they use silicon for the threads.
