Help with noise from left rear wheel area?

Post by ToyX4 »

Hi

For a while now I'm noticing a klak-klak sound(sounds like metal on metal) from the left rear wheel area.
When the left rear drops into a pothole or off a rock, the sound is there.
Sometimes under power also.
But it is at worst when the difflock is engaged and the rear loses traction and spins.

I thought it might be the diff, but my friend stood outside today while I was driving an obsticle to detect where the sound is from. He said it looks as if though the rim is loose.

Any ideas what it could be, so I can check it out before it breaks.

Loose wheel nuts :? :? Try fastening them with your wheel spanner before driving to Megaworld to go and buy the spare wheel carrier or else the wheel my fall out

Riaan

Herman, ruk gaan ek hom ruk. :x En regmaak gaan ek doen voor hy my laat staan

Have you solved this problem yet? Maybe it is the rear leaf spring blades clapping together.

Hey Simon. I don't believe it could be the leave springs bashing together. If I remember correctly I only heard the sound comming from his bakkie when he's diiflock was switched on. And to me it sounded if the noise was coming from the pumpkin at the back or right rear wheel.

Thanks Simon, I'll look at the leafs too. My original thought was that something on the suspension rear could be loose or something.

I have not looked for the fault today, will definately try too find out what is wrong on Monday.

Cassie, it makes the noise without difflock engaged, in 4x4 and 4x2, on gravel and tar, espesially when the left rear drops into a pothole.

Bennie, waar wil jy gaan ry?

O.K. So today I put in a new bearing and seals, as the original bearing was shot.

But, the sound is still there if I pull up to a steep incline to let the rear wheels spin.

Also, when the wheel is jacked up and I turn the wheel, there is a bit of play before it turns the drive shaft. - Is this normal?

I also noticed that the second from the top leaf is broken

The mech at Toyota says it is normal backlash, but I find this hard to believe. Just waiting for the workshop manager to get back to work, then I'll demonstrate it to him.

THe noise was the broken leaf spring blades.

When fitting a new blade, should I do both sides, or can I only replace the broken one?

I thought it was something to do with the blades, depending on your finance, it would be better to remove the two rear spring packs and have a new blade fitted where the one is broken, have both packs re-set up and new centre bolts fitted as well, however or just have the one blade done for now, you can always do the other pack sometime in the future.
