front left KlunK sound when brake applied

Post by Musselcracker »

Hi guys,

Got a bit of strange one here (I am sure ToYbox can help explain it better)

We took the left front wheel off to change those pesky little oil/grease seals in side the front axle.

Ever since that, whenever I apply the brake there is a hollow klunking sound coming from that front left tyre region! Even when i am parked and press the brakes I can hear it... i must say it has not effected braking performance as such as I drove back to Durban from Cape Town with no problems

Any ideas.. any part or piece we could have missed?

hello chris, those sort of noises make an oke nervous, try and shake the tyre to see if the bearings have come loose if the lock tab on the nut that tightens the bearings is old especially on left side as wheel rotation is same direction as loosening the bearings also brake calyper must be solid no movement sure it will be a simple thing cheers

Great thanks.... i wonder how that could have happened as we didn't touch the brakes at all...we took off the entire brake disc off as a whole unit!!

do they wear / rust brake and fall out

"your callipers are missing the anti-rattle spring"

Mmmm, not so sure about that one, remember the piston is making the brake pad drag on the disc continuously (slightly).
That anti-rattle being gone will result in exactly what the name says, a rattle.

Make sure the calliper was torqued with no debris close to the mounting hole, maybe sitting marginally skew to the disc.
And a partial bleed will also be beneficial, if you had to push the piston back to take off the calliper.

Check the wheel bearing, had a similar noise on Bolt, turned out the WB wasn't tight enough... just raise the front, grab the tyre and feel for play... it's easy to tighten... just a little messy! Check the torque rod as well, could be loose or worn.

Did mine last weekend and it took me all but 60 minutes. You don't even have to take the wheel off

Okay ...

I phoned a couple of brake places today to look for anti rattle springs! Could not find any anywhere.....

Ended up phoning the stealers in durban centre, first of all the guy said he knew what i was talking about and I should come around I have plenty!!

This i thought was a great start, went round there got to look at one of artic trucks in the showroom and went round to the parts. Turns out the guys was completely off the mark and had to order them from the factory!

there goes my weekend of fixing my annoying clunk noise!! sigh.... i reckon if i am lucky they will be here next week! but more likely the week after next!

anyways they are r70 a set...... I got up sold into buying 2 sets!

On the IFS you get new springs with certain brands of brake pads, eg. ATE
'02 KZ 'Lux. Cooled. Chipped. Onca'd. Cherished!
