Clutch replacement

I need your opinion.

I need to replace my van's clutch. How difficult is it to do if one has a descent transmission jack?

My reason for asking is my mechanic will charge me about R1700 labour to replace the clutch. I can buy a 1t Trasmission jack for R1900. So for R200 more I will then have a tool I will be able to do it for free in future.

Cassie, if you have a wheel trolley jack, make the attachment to fit onto the jack. Go to Adendorff's and copy the design with your eyes.

The job is difficult cause that tranny is so darn heavy. Replaced clutch on all my previous 4x4's.

You dont need a transmission jack just a normal trolly jack will do the trick too......
All you need to do is make up a plate with movable pins and bingo job done....

And the trolley jack must be a bigish one, the standard 1 or2 ton won't be good enough, cause it will topple over too easily if the tranny weight shifts a little too much. Often you need to wiggle the tranny around a little when re-fitting it, this can be very hazardous with a small trolley jack!

Oh and also be careful because most standard trolley jacks don't have the vertical(up/down) range required to remove/refit the box, especially on a raised suspension vehicle like our 4x4's!

Get a 4ton and then all you do is use 8mm or 10mm plate and extend the wheels out about 100mm each side and that will help with the stability....

Oh and one last thing... the bellhousing, gearbox and transmission is flippin expensive, if it tips and falls you might be in for a nasty bill!

I believe you may well be able to hire one from HireAll or the like for R150 or so! Makes sense to me!

If you get the one from Adendorff, the orange one. I use that one, one man operation, tilt nice to get the gearbog in. Out in 20 min max.

I quite like the look of this design, height will never be an issue, just wonder id it's strong enough for a larger tranny.

This one is the one I use. Is not so small. I used it on Bosbeer with the Marlin gear, gearbox and transfer, bloody heavy. Travel is quite high, with Bosbeer it could have been another 200mm higher and still would have reached.

That is exactly the one I'm aiming to buy

If memory serves me correct they go for R1995

Cassie, just remember when you replace the clutch, also replace the pilot bearing, normally not part of the kit. You don't want to open it up again just for a R30 bearing. And if you are finished with yours then we know who to go to when we need ours replaced, ne?

Thanks Werner. I will be doing the clutch plate, pressure plate, pilot bearing, main gearbox oil seal and crank shaft oil seal while I have the gearbox out

And what about the inner gearbox bearings??
Hmmmm and your 1st gear looked a bit jumpy on saturday so best get that recut.....
And while you at it the diff seals and universal joints.....
Then the diff oil, suspention lift, body lift and the 35" wheels....

Shew its gonna set you back a wack of moola hey....

Seems the clutch plate is going to cost me lots of moola.

I will have the gearbox and transfercase overhauled at a later stage. First have to find a trust worthy gearbox place that won't cost an arm and a leg.

Ek het bg. roete gegaan. My redenasie was dieselfde as joune. Ek het die Adendorf transmission jack gekoop. Nou het ek die ding en hoef nie weer te sukkel nie

. Die enigste probleem is dat die karavaan nou buite moet staan sodat ek plek het vir die jack

I need to check the gearbox mounting etc as well so I will go the transmission jack route

Friend got a recent quote for the G/box overhaul on his 22R...R16 000 :wth:

Thats about the same price as a recon box if you have your old one...
So you may as well take your old one out get the recon and fit it the same day no time delays......

Dit kan nie so moeilik wees nie. Ek het al n Clutch gedoen in die middel van die duine teen n duin nogal in die laaste Afrika Dakar wedren. Jy moet net n vriend nooi met lekker stewig arms om vas tehou, gaan jou twee biere kos lol.

And there's a spigot shaft seal, on the gearbox side. If you do replace it, just watch out that you put it back in the right way round. Easy mistake.

I wish I was clever enough to do this when I replaced my clutch because that exact seal is now leaking

Generally what I do is I screw in a small self tapping screw into seals to extract them of course taking care not to scratch any of the surrounding surfaces

I usually use a rubber mallet of some sort to gently tap it in and the old seal as a buffer as well as a socket of some sort to spread the load over the whole surface. This is if press fit won't work.

Just do yourself a hugh favour.. get some red rubber grease and smear it on the oil seal before fitting

Aisin is the real group that makes Toyota parts. But now, Sachs makes these kits under the Aisin brand.

Then if you buy at Toyota a clutch kit you get LUK...seldom Aisin.

This is a Vigo V6 plate I done 2 months ago. Ordered Toyota and got this. Not the 1st time.
