Lets talk hose clamps.

Post by Kaspaas »

What hose clamps do you use?
The wire type, skrew type or worm drive clamps?
I know the wire type is the best, but do you still get them?

If you do have to use a worm drive clamp (tight situation) on pipes of between 20mm -30mm what make of worm drive do you use?

Have a look here:
Do you get something similar here in RSA?

I'm not sure that wire is better than a band (much of a muchness I think), but the screw (bolt and nut) types are better ... the worms tend to strip after a bit of use. I prefer the stainless units if available but the problem is that although the band may be stainless, they often use mild steel bolts that are galvanised. That said, if it's going to be clamped and left in an application that's not exposed to the weather or underground, even though I prefer the stainless, bolt type, I wouldn't have too much problem using a galvanised, worm type.

I try and use the bolt and nut type where ever possible..... The problem is they a bit tough to find nowdays every stockist is selling the worm type :slap:

I don't really think that the wire clamps are the best. People tend to over tighten them and then they end up cutting the rubber hoses when the hoses get old. On cars I prefer worm type clamps but use only one product. Norma. You get two kinds of worm clamps. The ones with the perforations which strip easily and are utter rubbish and the ones with ridges pressed into the clamp. The Norma ones are very strong and you really need to abuse them before they strip.

They'll be fine if you don't over tighten them and are not going to use them underground or where they'll be exposed to the weather. The stainless band will help that it doesn't strip so easily but why they don't make the screw assembly from stainless as well I'll never understand. ;-)

One of the forum members contacted me more than a year ago saying they are manufacturing good quality stainless steel hose clamps. Does anybody know who it is? I cannot remember  :slap:

A few years ago I bought a rolled up mild steel strip and a few wurms to enable you to make your owm clamps according to the size you need.
This works well as you can make the clam to whatever size you need...
They were purchesed at Midas...

The worst hose clamps I've come across are those RSA stamped ones... horrible rubbish! If you find one on your vehicle replace it!
