Horses back in the kraal

Post by george »

My KZ was getting quite heavy on Fuel and was getting sluggish. When it was in the dunes it I could not get over the steep dunes.Even Hopsters tried and the old girl just ran out of steam.
The first thing I did was to replace injectors. That did not do much although the injectors was almost on their way out.
Hoppy did a free flow, but again not much improvement
Then Hoppy took the van to be tested and found that the Turbo was good ,but the diesel pump was on its way out
Now we had 2 options.1 recon the standard pump.2 Install a mechanical pump from a (Colt).Price more or less the same.
Pros of a mechanical.Easy to tune.A lot cheaper to overhaul. No more electronics.I went for it
I sourced a diesel pump and then we did a complete overhaul on it.Hoppy did the installation and all his magic
There is still a few small things like the rev counter , aircon and engine light that we will sort out next week.Maybe still a IC and then dyno.
BUT the performance is stunning. My VAN is pulling like a steam train :dance1: :dance1:
What I really like is that I know have the reliability of old school diesel. The ECU is only there for the glow plugs
Thanks Allen

I know :ttwwp:

So I drove a total of 200km and filled her up again and everything looks A OK.23liters that makes it about 8.7 lt per kilo.
The pump is still not properly tuned ,because there is still quite a bit of black smoke. So far I am extremely happy.
Wit the old pump I struggled to get 7.5 lt per kilo.
Here is some photo's.You cant see much but just fro Donkey

Thanks to Hoppy again  We manage to sort out everything. The main culprit was the rev counter. We took it a couple of weeks back to Modjects. They manage to find a signal, but the rev counter was way off. When idle it only showed 400rpm. This was to low for the AC. Unfortunately it was a Friday and I had to get back home and left it as is. So basically my rev counter was reading half of what it should have been.
The other day I was at Allan again. He showed me on a rev counter laying on his racks in how to adjust it.
Today I got the speedo cluster out and voila. My rev counter is now working 120% :slap: Me being blond adjusted it to idle at around 900rpm.The van is actually idling a bit higher than normal.I took that into account, but I didnt realise that the van was still cold.
When I took it for spin I notice once warm the idle sits at 1000rpm. So basically my rev counter is to high, but that is fine for now. I am to lazy to take it out again.

The last thing is a proper tune on the dyno. But I will only do that once the downpipe and IC is installed.Dont think that will happen to soon.

Must say I am glad I installed the EGT. When ever I push the throttle to the max those temps climb through the roof.

If you're ever inclined to pull out the cluster again to re-adjust the rev counter, try get the loan of an old type tach / dwell meter. The tacometer takes a pulse off the #1 plug lead and calculates the revs from '1 pulse = 2 revolutions' so it's spot on. You then adjust your rev counter to match. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

I will have to do a conversion to get a plug lead. No problem we know you are a 100 today

Hahaha ..... my bad. Of course you're running a diesel ...... posted in a hurry before going for dinner without thinking. :blushing: Not sure how one would do it with a diesel, but there must be a way.

You can use this one http://www.tinytach.com/
But I am not bothered to much. I drove more on the EGT.

Roger- If I could get that on my 4Y I would have never sold it.

Thabo-I love my rook and kook

George hoe het julle die throttle kabel verander? Die Kz het mos 'n electronic throttle. Ek kyk ook na omswaai manual pump toe as my diesel pomp die gees gee.

Hy loop soos 'n trein  Ek kry so net rondom 9 km per lieter.
