Hilux vs. Fortuner Power

Post by DerikB »

Hi Guys

Quick question

I am taking delivery of my new Hilux tomorrow :yahoo: (2011 Xtracab 3.0D-4d 4x4), but I would just like to confirm one thing..

On Saturday I test drove it and I had my brother in law with me. I asked him to drive a few km because he drives a Fortuner 3.0D-4D 4x2 and should be able to tell me if something was not right.

He said to me the Hilux feels "lazy". When I returned I took his Fortuner for a test and I could feel the difference specially from around 1800rpm that the turbo kicks in. Much more pronounced than my Hilux.

Now I asked the salesman to take it in to the workshop for them to check. They came back to me saying the two models will feel different as apparently the Fortuner uses a different gearbox?

Can someone who drove both please confirm if the Hilux feels different to the Fortuner?

Should I be worried?

The Hilux, believe it or not is about 100kg heavier. Could account for a difference all be it a little one.

First I hear that the gearbox is different.

Derik, I have noticed in the past that a vehicle that has been nursed in the past can also be a bit lazy. This vehicle is three years old and nursing it could result in the cats blocking from wasted unburned fuel. There have been threads on this forum where this results in the vehicle eventually goes into limp mode. Try get a service check on this vehicle from another Toyota dealer to see what problems may have been reported in the past and what was done to rectify them. It is unusual to sell a vehicle after three years unless the buyer replaces vehicles after the waranty has expired. If the previous owner is a regulor Toyota owner then his past vehicles owned will show the same trend (sold after three years). If this is the case phone some of the 2nd owners to find if any problems were experienced by them after they purchased these vehicles...
Good Luck with your purchase & we all hope you have many trouble free miles.

Thanks Haboob.

I took delivery today and I think I might have over reacted a bit on the power issue!! It's not that much slower!! But the CAT/DPF will meet it's match this weekend in anyway!

I also got a nice surprise! There was a bag in the canopy and the Salesman told me that its seatcovers that they took off, I can have them or throw them away if I do not want it. (Btw, seats are brand new, was always covered.)

To my surprise... A set of Melvill & Moon covers I just priced yesterday at R3400!!

I am really happy with my Lux, you can see the previous owner, whoever that was, cared for the car!

Geluk Derik. hoop jy kry somer baie gelukkige kilos uit jou bakkie uit. Die ander lekker ding is dat jy kan seker wees iemand wat Melville en Moon covers koop vir sy bakkie sal hom andersins ook oppas.

Thanks guys, I have done about 300km since receiving it and I am enjoying every moment!

This weekend I will start to kit it, lots of gear from my Pajero that I need to make fit! Just too expensive to buy again.

Stef atleast it's not a problem atm! For now I'm thinking of mounting my NL 50L fridge back there for padkos!!

Time to give a bit of an update...

I've now done just over 10 000km with my Hilux, and I am enjoying every moment! :yahoo:

At the recent 120 000 km service (R5000!), I had the Injectors tested and they are all still in an excellent condition. (#1 = -0.2, #2 = 0.1, #3 = 0.3, #4 = 0.1). Range is between -3.0 to +3.0

We've also just gotten back from a two week holiday in Southern Namibia and these were my consumption figures:

Best of 10.1 km/l on the Kalahari Highway though Bots.
Worst of 7.5 km/l driving in riverbed sand, sometimes thick during the 4x4Comm Shoe Rock GTG.

Overall average of 9.42 km/l over 6393 km during our Holiday! Coming from a 3.5 V6 Pajero, I'm very happy!

This was the setup:

Only the standard Bridgestones let me down, I repaired 3 punctures and currently have another slow puncture I still need to sort out. But I will replace them before my next overlanding trip.

Wishing everyone a wonderful 2015!
