Diff klap

Post by Whisky »

I drive a 2009 Hilux DC, 82 000Km on the clock.

When I change gears and let the clutch go the diff makes a clap sound :eh: , this is when the drive-shaft grips in the diff I suppose. Is this normal for a Toyota? At times I drive the work Nissan NP 300 bakkie and it does not make that sound  , the change over is smooth.

It's easy enough to check if it's universals, centre carrier bearing or diff back-lash - just get in under there (you have enough clearance without the use of jacks, Ben), and check it by hand. First in neutral and start at the diff, turning the prop ecah way checking for play in the diff, then each uni one at a time. If you don't find any play after the last uni, put it into gear, lift the rear tyres off the ground and check the play from the gearbox / x-fer box.

Hopefully it's just one thing, but it could be a possibility of it being a combination of a little play in each (worst case). IMO it will rarely be the carrier that's at fault for your symptoms, but check it for sideways play at the same time - up / down as well as sideways. It should move about 2 to 3 mm either way, but the movement should feel firm, not sloppy. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
