Straight pipe on D4D
Hi all
I'm thinking of messing with the exhaust on my 06 3.0 D4D Tuna
I understand that replacing the exhaust with a bigger diameter one will reduce turbo temps and give quicker spool up
I'm thinking of removing all the boxes and using a straight pipe. This will make a little more smoke but are there any other draw-backs?

Re: Straight pipe on D4D
Except for noice and that it would be illegal there is no problem with a straight pipe. We run our vehicles with just a 600mm pipe from the turbo and we have no issues. Because it is a military vehicle we can get away with it.

Very little noise. The turbo act to absorb the noise, however, you will hear the turbo whistle more pronounced.

Cool
Yip, I'd love to hear the turbo whistle
Now just to convince swambo that it's an essential mod...

So the story is that benefits include:
- better fuel consumption
- healthier for the engine and turbo
- more power :)

Will SA traffic cops even pick that up?

You take your chances you will have to put up with the Consequences...
Just one guy sees hears you passing at the wrong time of the Day or Night is enough to cause more than a slight headache...
There are a lot of Toyotas on the road to set the example and one that sounds slightly different is easy to distinguish...
I have a freeflow fitted with once silencer and a muffler at the back and I was approched in Swakopmund to find out what mods I had done as the exhaust sounds different...
People do notice...

Same here, we were on a dune driving day at walvisbaai over December holidays, while the bakkie was standing idling, a guy approached and asked what have I changed as the car sounds different. And he was only walking by, lol.

Re: Straight pipe on D4D
Nah, it won't be that loud to be illegal.
And if so, how will the officer test it?

Re: Straight pipe on D4D
Thabo has hit the nail on the head. Even if they had properly calibrated equipment the results of which would be acceptable in a criminal court, which they don't, they certainly do not have the people qualified or trained to perform the tests. I heard a 3lt Isuzu with a straight pipe the other day under full bore acceleration and the turbo really kills the sound. It was surprisingly soft and much softer than some standard performance cars.

Re: Straight pipe on D4D
Fuel consumption will stay more or less the same. Power might increase a LITTLE but it is the quicker spooling that is really nice :)
I have a full De Graaff system and it has a deeper sound to it but you will struggle to hear the difference when inside the car. Turbo whistle noise is also still the same as before but I have heard that if you only do a straight pipe with the OEM exhaust still intact the turbo whistle is a bit louder!
