Prado 90 series Auto Box problems

Post by Lamara02 »

Dear All
I'm new to the forum and needed some advice on my gearbox problem I picked up when I bought the van about a year ago. It's a 3.4 auto v6 and it purrs like a kitten. major issues I picked up one related to the drive shaft and the other to the gearbox. In the mornings or when the car has been idle for over an hour or two, i will hear a massive knock (metal against metal clunck) when engaging from Park to Reverse. A similar sound but less intense is heard when I move from R to D as well as when the gearbox shift from high to low. I've been told by my local mechanic that it sounds like the universal joints on the propshaft is worn. Had that refurbished but no luck in sorting out the problem then discovered that the van picked up a vibration on the propshaft or drivetrain at 110 KPH. I can even feel it through the steering wheel. The vibration completely disappears when I remove my foot from the petrol and returns when the petrol is pressed.

Did anyone on the forum experience a similar problems and what can be done to fix it.? Or perhaps direct me to who I can speak to in the Cape Town Western Cape Area.

Your feedback would be much appreciated.

Have your bushes checked on the drag links etc. on the rear diff.
Is there a lot of play on the rear diff?

I'm having the bushes on my Prado replaced with Teflon bushes today, Toyota is very Pricy on these.

I suspect yours is a combination of the bushes, play on rear diff and gearbox. But then again I'm no mechanic.

All the best.

George, I am not having any problems of this nature - yet. But please post some more info on the Teflon bushes - part numbers, who supplies them, pics if possible? Always good to have info like this on hand.

Hi Guys
Those bushes are only sold by Toyota :-(

A local Mechanic buys the Teflon in a tube and then puts it on his lathe "draaibank" ant then makes his own bushes.
These are made to fit, will let you know the outcome.

I would suggest you get that vehicle quickly to Mr Hoppy down in Brackenfell as he should be able to advise you on what needs to be done or what is possibly causing the problem.

I would like to suspect that maybe the oil is very old and causing some of the noise as the lubrication is not enough. Let us know what the outcome is on this one.

Just a quick feed back
10 bushes on the rear dif made out of Teflon tubing. R2500.00 + labour
my biggest culprit was the top two track bars from the chassis to the diff. but i decided to do all 10, and boy am i happy what a big difference!

Lamara02 take your van to Hoppy he will sort it out
But i'm thinking it's the same problem as mine.
