Spiral Cable Replacement - FYI

Post by Neildbn »

Hi

For those of you (Like Me) who need to replace the spiral cable and did not fall into the recall program. I got a quote from the agent for R 6005 plus fitment.

I looked on line and found the replacement spiral cable for R 240 (US$ 15) ordered it and it arrived 3 weeks later deliver to the local post office, fitted myself in less than 1hr and works like a dream.

The site is: http://www.aliexpress.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's a very good price. I replaced mine myself, cost of part for Toyota was something like R1300.

Mine was also replaced by toy with a service, can't remember what I paid for it.

On what models was the recall?

Get the part number from the dealer and count the pins in the plugs before you order it, be careful of the airbag etc. when fitting
Thanks in advance

I f you are unsure if you vehicle falls under the recall list, contact them and give your VIN no.
They then replace it for free. I bought my vehicle with it already done by the previous owner.

Unfortunately mine didnt fall into that category. Been reading up and seems to also be responsible for the cruise control to not work. Anyone replaced the spiral cable for cruise control and solved the problem?

Spiral Cable Replacement - FYI

Post by oricpretorius »

Hi guys
My spiral cable has started giving notice for a while now.

Does any one know where i can get a new one ( with steering controls and cruise control ) except from Toyota?

I have tried a few Goldwagen branches in Kzn but non of them have stock and they can’t order as its on back order.

Any advice will be appropriated.

Thanks

It's a pity you are so far from Gauteng. I have a brand new one still in the box. I bought it and never used it.

Was this not subject to a recall?

Enter your VIN number on https://www.toyota.co.za/owners/toyota-recall website and check.

Only certain models got the spiral cable replaced as part of the airbag replacement.
The pre-2011 was not due for spiral replacement... or so i was told by Toyota.
Some members here did manage to get it right though. Guess depends on the branch you went to and how well you know the manager.

Went to Toyota today to check out if i was on the recall list. Toyota told me the recall was only for my airbag ( which they did replace ) but not the spiral cable. Only pre 2014 had the spiral cable and airbag.
But i think you right about the branch. . .

:?: :?:

you mentioned pre-2014 got spiral and airbag.
but i only got airbag. I confirmed with two branches in CT.

I found this article that also says pre facelist...

https://www.iol.co.za/motoring/cars/toy ... 0UM5l5RduY

which means i should have had spiral cable replaced?
I'm not sure if they did replace my spiral cable, because before cruise control not working, and after still not working, and a new spiral cable supposed to fix this issue ??

I could not find a spiral cable from any spares shop that does the speed control and phone buttons on the steering wheel. the spiral cable has a little blue box attached to it. that's how you know it will work with the phone buttons and speed control. I searched everywhere. eventually had to fork 6K out at the dealers.

Just some update on my recall status...
My spiral cable was in fact replaced. Toyota sent me job card that the spiral cable as replaced as recall the year before i bought the vehicle.
When i received it , it was again in for another recall , this time for airbag inflator.
I thought it part of the same issue, but apparenlty not.

Not sure why my cruise control never working though... if spiral cable was fairly new.
I'm not even sure if 2007 model came with cruise control as optional extra. Some say it does, others say no.
Check with previous owner and they not to sure either.

maybe the little blue box busted ??

nope. took it for steering rack replacement to a mech (not Toyota). they turned the steering too much without the rack in and snapped the cable. then denied it. had to fork out for the cable myself at Toyota. mech will never see me again. Toyota might be expensive but wont take my hilux anywhere else. at least when Toyota stuffs up they admit it and fix their mess ups

Hi Rigardt

I bought a spiral cable from “Air Bag Doctor”
I paid under R 1500 including overnight door to door and it works just like the original with all the steering buttons and the speed control.

Their service was outstanding!!

I sent them pictures of my spiral cable via Whatsapp and they sent me the correct part.
