Could it be the centre bearing?
Wife complained that the 2.7 (1999) had been making a funny noise the last few days. Took it for a spin, and felt faint vibration under braking/deceleration. Started by replacing front brakes as they were due anyways, and then today took the old girl (2.7, not my wife ) out on the highway. Under accelleration no issues, but as soon as you let off the accelerator there's a "dry" hum, faint vibration. Same if you take her out of gear and simply coast.
Arrived in PTA and crawled under bakkie, pressed up on propshaft at centre bearing. There is a bit of movement, but not overly much.
Bakkie was in 1st gear (engine off) and I was able to turn propshaft about 10 degrees. I assume this is simply due to a bit of play in gearbox.
Could the hum be due to a worn centre bearing?
And if so, is it advisable to replace it myself or should I rather have it done at a place like Propshaft centre?

I feel a lot less wise at 45 than I did at 15.

Re: Could it be the centre bearing?
Mickey, try and spray a bit of Q20 or something into the center bearing, next to the rubber and drive it again. Sometimes they get dry and make a noise, if the noisy is gone then you will know that it is the center bearing. You will have to replace it as this spray does not last long. I check them this way on the farm as we drive through a lot of muddy water and dust. They are pretty easy to replace. There should be a topic somewhere on the forum about replacing them.

Also grease the slip-joint and uni's while you're under there.

Could be Universal joints oran unbalanced propshaft. Maybe even a clutch?
I would rather take the prop to be reconned(and don't get conned!) and ballanced. Much cheaper than gearbox repairs if prop is on balanced!

Doesn't sound like centre bearing, bearing would make a squeaking sound, especially in reverse.

Re: Could it be the centre bearing?
Agree with Thabo and Stef, if the vibration is there when you lift your foot but goes away when you accelerate it is the universals.
If you have them replace have the centre bearing replace at the same time. That ten degree play on the diff is normal.
