Sealant on petrol tank?

Post by Kaspaas »

Hi Guys,

On top of the SFA's petrol tank you have the inlet "opening" where you install the fuel gauge float mechanism.
The rubber that is supposed to seal the fuel gauge float mechanism to the tank is worn, thus not sealing properly.

What can I use?
Is it safer to use gasket paper and make a gasket, or is there a sealant on the market that wont dissolve in petrol?
Had a very bad experience with Red Devil sealant. :blackeye:

Thanks in advance.

Regards

I don't altogether trust the silicone based sealants with fuel applications either. I would go with a thick gasket paper. (I think you kinda answered your own question.) :D:

Okay oom Andy,

Point taken, now is there a correct way of prepping the gasket paper??

Any pointers?

It does already have a coating of sorts when you buy it - I've always just used it "as is" without any problems. The reason I say to use a thicker paper is to take up any distortion that there may be, but be careful not to go so thick that you cannot get the flange to locate.

The next alternative is to cut it from rubber gasket sheeting that is fuel compatible but I think you may battle a bit to get the right stuff.

Wouldn't a fuel/oil resistant o-ring suffice here?
