2700i 4 x4 speedo whipping and engine light!

Post by bryanhart »

Hi guys my 2700i has just done 240 000 km. On the way back from Sodwana the speedo siezed. I took the speedo out and it was repaired. The cable was also changed as it was broken. The speedo is now whipping not big but between 20 40km mark. It then settles down after 40.??
But.... Now the engine light comes on?!!

Any advice on if the engine light and speedo are linked?
Any advice on why the speedo is whipping?

Sounds like your speedo has discovered S & M ! :D:

If the speedo is cable driven as you say, then it's not going to interfere with the electronics of the engine light. The speedo cable has been kinked a little somewhere when it was fitted or it has been routed in such a way that that there is a sharp bend somewhere. Alternatively they bent something ever so slightly in the speedo mechanism when it was repaired. Either way, take it back to whoever did the repairs.

IRO the engine light, what motor is in there? Diesel or petrol? Are you sure it's the engine light and not alternator or oil pressure?
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

And it is the yellow engine light not oil or battery light that is coming on.

I have the slightly larger than spec tyres on the Lux. Would that create the problem in terms of the speedo ?

Nope. Most of us run larger tyres - 31" - and the only end result is that the speedo reading now is closer to true speed. As Andy said, you have a kink in the cable or they did not perhaps use the genuine Toyota speedo cable. It is reported that there are issues with aftermarket cables, you need to use the genuine one. Although it's not cheap, try for a bit of discount from TSA.

I had the same problem when I snapped my speedo cable. Replaced the cable, disconnected the battery. It did an automatic reset on the engine light.

Ok so it is an after market cable. Took it back to the guy and they fiddled with the cable and it seems to be better than it was.
I took took the live lead off the battery / I did not take black lead off. But just went for a drive and the engine light came back on.

When they worked on the cluster they damaged it. The cluster must send a speedsignal to the engine ecu.

Mine did the same.
The engine light will come on if it loses the speedometer.
You will need to reset it through diagnostics.

If I am correct there is another speed sensor on your gearbox. Sometimes the plug becomes loose and the engine light will come on.

Since you lost the speedo the engine light will come on.

I replaced Hound Dog's speedo cable, after having done so the engine light no longer burned so probably not necessary to reset it through the diagnostics.
