CV Joint Kit IFS

Post by drew3 »

Hi all

I have seen that my left outer cv joint seems to have leaked a lot of grease. The car has done 175 000km. How often should one replace the grease? There does not appear to be grease nipple I can just pump into.

I have read about CV joint kits that one can get from Toyota themselves. How difficult are these to install? As far as I understand they include the grease and boots etc.

For starters, watch a youtube video to see if you feel comfortable to attempt and get VERY dirty.

If you feel confident, then go ahead!

CV's at Toyota cost R4500 - each. N1 4X4 sells them for R650. I couldn't wait for them and got from Goldwagen for R450, but there is a small problem with them. The flange on the CV that fits over the seal is a little too big and touches the ABS sensor. I "tapped" it "smaller" and all is good. I also replaced the 2x brass bushes and needle bearings. Not a difficult job, but rater a lengthy job. Steering knuckle must come off. While busy, I also replaced the brake discs and bearings. N1-4x4's prices are good, but you might have to wait to give them time to order.

Hi Louis. Thanks for that. The CV itself I am sure is still fine. It is just leaking grease from the boot as far as I can tell.

I was quoted R 1500-ish for the cv boot kit from Toyota. Seems a bit ridiculous for a rubber boot and some clips to hold it in place.

I used the boots that was supplied with the CV's. Partquip for the inners.

To replace just the boots and do all the work to get to them, rather replace everything you can afford while you are at it. To replace the CV is as much work as to replace only the boot.

Maybe first check whether the current boots have cracks. If they don't then use a nice big (8mm wide) cable tie instead of the metal clamp. I have done mine previously like that and it lasted for at least 5 years. you can add ghrease from the "big side" of the boot.

Yeah understood. I think I will give that a go before trying to haul everything off. Thanks Louis.

N1 4x4 does have a branch in Bots.

Rather than a cable tie, I prefer to use a big hose clamp if it has enough space to turn unhindered. The hose clamp seals much tighter than a cable tie and can be reused - but each to his own.
