So I was driving back from the client in town (Pretoria) and my aircon suddenly stopped working as I hit the hill right after Fountains Circle. The light on the switch was still on, but I could feel the air becoming warm very quickly. It is now the same when I have it switched on as when switched off. Also, I don't feel a drop in power when I switch it on.
Is it possible that this is just a switch problem, or could it be something else like the gas needing a refill?
Does someone know of a reliable aircon specialist in Pretoria East where I can take it to, or should I rather take it to the dealers?

Chances are that you have lost refrigerant - when this happens there is a safety 'cut-out' to protect the compressor, which may be why it's not kicking in.

had the same problem with the suzie...
regas sorted it out, but also found a slight leak on the connector where they refill... so it would need a refill again soon, or needed to be replaced.

Thanks Shaakir, I'll make sure they check for leaks as well.

They will do a full system check before re-gassing and only replace what is absolutely necessary. Recently he ordered a number of expensive parts for my friends old C180 Merc only to find a small electrical fault on disassembly. Not only did he not replace any of the parts ordered but he only charged him the short period in labour to fix the fault. He could have replaced all the parts and my friend would have been none the wiser.
