D4D running rich.

Post by bullit »

Evening all.

I'm having an issue with my 05 D4D at the moment.
When vehicle is running, doesn't matter if it's just started or I've been driving for a while. I get a very strong smell of diesel comin from the exhaust.

Seems like the vehicle is running rich or smells that way. I had the vehicle serviced 2000km ago but still a strong smell.

I've been around other D4D's and haven't smelled the same potency of diesel.

All advice appreciated.

Did they your air flow meter when it was serviced? Should be done every time the air filter is changed.

Hi.
Have you checked that maybe you don't have leak or a disconnect breather pipe from you fuel tank.

Isn't the sulphur/typical diesel smell an indication that the injectors may be on their way out?
Try popping in a bottle of wynns diesel injection cleaner with about 30L of fuel and see if there is any difference

I'm not sure it the air meter was cleaned. Is this something I can do?

Don't think a breather has popped off as it is a definite smell from the exhaust.

Well I hope the injectors aren't on the way out. Il put some injector cleaner in the tank and see.

Crc make a dedicated maf sensor cleaner. Do NOT try and clean it with a cotton tip! The hot wires in there are very easily damaged! Simply remove it and all it takes is a few good blasts with the correct solvent, electrical contact cleaner can be use or anything that doesn't leave any residue. Also make sure you wait 20 mins after the engine is off so the unit has cooled down enough.

Is the sensor plug located on the top of the air box?

Thats the one, two small screws. There is a thin oring under it so dont loose it or pinch it putting it together.

Any auto store should keep it or have something similar.

So an update guys.

I can't find any sensor cleaner anywhere. The outlets are saying that Wynns throttle body cleaner is the same thing.

Can I use throttle body cleaner. Totally clueless here.

All else fails go to an electronics store and get some electrical contact cleaner. Has to be a product that leaves no residue!

Throttle Body cleaner or carburetor cleaner will do the job. You just don't want something that leaves and oily residue on the hot wire(s).

Some throttle and carby cleaners will attack plastic and rubber so be careful, the unit is worth about $400aud!!

Yes it works. I use that regularly. BUT make sure it says "MAF sensor safe" or something along those lines on the can.

Take your van to toyota and ask them to do an injector test and they must give you the tolerance figures. Think as long as it's with in -3 to +3 you should be okay....

So I picked this up over the week end.

Should be alright to use on the sensor?

Whilst it does not specifically say that it is MAF safe it does state that it leaves no residue and is plastic and rubber safe. It also states for use on all electrical components on a vehicle.

Here is the link https://pim.liqui-moly.de/pidoc/P003339 ... 3.0-en.pdf

It is probably safe to use although I notice on the same document that they say the information provided is well researched but not legally binding.
