You can get from Toyota, otherwise just use a decent grade ATF from a service station or spares outlet.

Should be checked. If no leaks, then no filling required. I don't think the ATF works as hard or as hot in a steering pump as it does in a gearbox, so it shouldn't be necessary to replace it either. Should be a clear bright red colour, if opaque or brownish colour then drain and replace. There are no drain plugs so you would have to loosen a hose, preferably on the low pressure side of the box, and nip it back cleaned and carefully once drained - also check that it's not leaking afterwards.

I bought a bottle of Castrol dexon II this weekend. haven't filled my power steering yet. reason I bought it is my power steering whines when the vehicle is cold. when its hot its quiet. had someone turn the steering wheel while idling when the vehicle was cold and the fluid drops below the low level. I don't see any leaks. never had this whine before. its a new thing so will see if the top up fixes the whining otherwise will probably have to take it in to Toyota.

That whine is typical of fluid being low. It expands as it warms up so the volume is increased and the whine stops. I'm sure that a top up will sort the problem - there are two "Full" marks on the dip stick, one marked "Cold" and the other "Hot", fill it cold and check it again when hot. A little overfull when hot is not a problem as long as it's just a little over the mark. :winkx:

Yes I agree. The whining should stop once topped up. If there are no leaks the system will not need topping up. You are probably starting to get some minor leaks on the steering rack. If it keeps on doing it then top it up with Wynns Power Steering stop leak. Just keep on topping up till the leaking stops.

The D4D has a filling container with marks for cold (low, high) and hot (low, high). Very convenient.
