2.5 D4-D 2007 headlight failure

Post by ATH »

Hi,
If anyone is able to assist ...
I have a Hilux 2.5 D4-D 2007 and on getting into my vehicle to drive home tonight, no dims or headlights but brights work perfectly.
Fuses seem ok (not sure if I was looking at the right ones) but no lights outside of brights.
Please assist with suggestions if possible.
Thx
Andre

HI Andre,

Check the basics first.

If you have tail lights when the headlight switch is on Park lights and/ or headlights. That will indicate that the tail light / park light fuse is intact and not the problem.

Both headlight has a seperate 15A fuse in the fusebox. If they are not blown, I would suggest pulling the headlight relay and check for terminal corrosion . If none present then you most likely have just two blown head light globes on the dim circuit. You can also check if the tail light relay is working correctly.

This can be due to age, or bad earthing, or even an bad connector plug.

I suspect a bad earth .... check the tail lights (sockets, connectors / connections and wiring). Wasn't there a similar problem discussed here a short while ago?
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Hi Johan,

I have checked and:
- on dims the tail lights work and the dims don't work
- on next setting "main lights", tail lights work but not front lights
- brights work.

I have not checked the relay yet.

Is it possible that both "main beams" can go together on the globes?

Appreciate the assistance.

It certainly is! A matter of years ago we were staying in Durban (common link? ;D ) and one evening we were going out. I started the car, switched on the headlights (low beam) and poof! - the left headlight blew. Barely a second later, the right headlight blew - both "dims" were shot. These were with Osram H4 bulbs, the normal 60/65w globes supplied as OEM equipment. Not common, but the fault can occur.

When starting the car at night and switching the head lights on, the alternator charge can be - briefly - as high as 14.5v or thereabouts and I can only assume the globes did not like this "high" voltage. Once the alternator has charged the battery for a few minutes it settles down to ±1v less than this.
