Hi All,

I'm new to this forum and this is only my 2nd post.

I have a bit of a dilemma with KZTE , seems that the diesel pump stiffened up and nearly though the cam through the tappet cover. Keep in mind that the belt is intact still.

I have removed the head and found no trace of contact between the pistons and valves.

What would you suggest i do as finding parts for a KZTE is a nightmare and pricey.

Do I fix the KZTE or do I replace the motor with a petrol turbocharged?

lastly who is reliable in Cape Town if i decide to fix the motor.

Thank You

Jeez that's impressive.

Give Allan Venter a call - 0seven2 one2nine 11six0 - he is the Hilux whisperer and knows these motors backwards.
Possibly also query from him whether to swap out the head whilst you're at it as apparently the earlier model heads were prone to cracking...

Lucky with the belt!

Here's an idea for you:

You've already got the right gearbox.

Head will require replacing , all the cam caps are damaged , and so is the head as the bolts ripped out.

Gemini has a complete AMC head

Thank you , will read through and do some research and costing.

I have a clean 1JZTE in my garage with the engine mount and original computer box and fuse box.
Not sure how it will before off-road though , I don't do any hectic trails but more for sandy and semi gravel stony roads to access the good fishing spots.

The 1JZ was a good motor but getting old now and spares will also be a problem, so I would stick with the KZ and do the repairs ... should cost a helluva lot less than a conversion even if you already have the motor. Will also help to retain the resale value if it's the original motor as opposed to a conversion. The AMC head is a better option than an OEM one from Toyota. :winkx:
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Awesome , now to get hold of Alan lol

Any other mechanics recommended in Cape Town?

I enjoyed the van with the KZTE lump and would like to revive the little beast as its used a lot on family trips.

Alan suggested that I rather fix my motor.

Plan is to fit the AMC head and Colt diesel pump.

Does the Colt pump make any difference to performance and consumption on the KZTE?
