4Y Starting Issue

Post by LouwJou »

Hi All

Need some guidance wrt to Hilux 4Y. Bought the Hilux with some issue with the timing and revving. After further inspection I saw that the distributor was turned in such a way that the bolt that secures it was actually outside the normal guide gap. It only starts at this "angle". When the distributor is secured as it should be with the bolt through the actual gap it does'nt start at all. What could the cause of this be? Thank you in advance.

The dizzy is incorrectly splined with the cam. Take cap off the dizzy, take the bolt out and then pull the dizzy out slowly. You will see that the rotor turns on the helical splines as the dizzy lifts out. Once free of the splines, turn the rotor one spline at a time into the fault and slide the dizzy home, checking each time whether the bolt hole on the block lines up with that slotted hole on the dizzy. If the fault is getting worse then you are moving the splines in the wrong direction.

Easy fix. :D: :winkx:

To make sure the timing is correct. Remove plug from nr 1 piston and turn the engine until you feel pressure on piston nr 1. Make sure the timing mark on the crank pulley is in line with "0" TDC on timing cover. Make an mark on the dizzy with n black pen where the plug lead of nr 1 piston is. Remove the dizzy and put it back. The rotor must be in line with pen mark on dizzy. Put spark plug and dizzy cap back. Start engine and set timing.

Nope, 1342 is correct.

Idle speed should be 800 / 900 rpm when warm.
