Reputable Mechanic in Pinetown/Durban
I have a 2000 Hilux 2700i with 72 000km. Never given me any trouble. I left it standing for a while and it won't start. There doesn't seem to be fuel going to the engine. Checked the immobiliser and fuses. I can't hear the fuel pump coming on so think that it might be that. Can someone suggest a reputable mechanic in the Pinetown/Durban area?

Battery? Have you measured the battery voltage while trying to crank the engine? Night be a dead cell that collapses as soon as current is drawn.

What do you call a while? It could just be stale fuel or an airlock. Have you tried pull starting it?

Left it for around 9 months while I was away. Tried push starting. It could be an air lock. Any suggestions on how to check ir clear it?

I don't I'm afraid. Mine has a mechanical pump, so towing in gear (pull starting) will operate the pump. I would look for a bleed screw somewhere on the line. Watch out there might be quite a high pressure in there. Nine months is a long time, have you added fresh fuel?

Sorry, should also have mentioned that the engine is turning over but not starting. Sometimes it sounds like it is about to start but then just keeps turning over.

I havn't tried adding fresh fuel. The tank is half full. Would I need to drain the tank first before adding the fresh fuel?

Re: Reputable Mechanic in Pinetown/Durban
I surmised from your post that the engine is cranking, but you mentioned that you can't hear the fuel pump. There I can't help, I'm afraid, other than pulling off a fuel pipe, crank and see if fuel flows.
It would definitely be better to drain the tank and fill with fresh fuel, but you might get away with just topping it up. It is also possible that the tank has accumulated a fair amount of water through condensation, which will sit at the bottom of the tank, so probably a good idea to siphon out 10 or so litres from the bottom (use in your lawnmower)
I am assuming that you have spark and the electrics are functioning

Thanks so much for the advice. I will drain the fiel tank and add fresh fuel.
Yes, there is a spark and the electrics seem fine but I did read an earlier post with the person experiencing similar issues and the cause was a short in the fuel system curcuit. Wondering if I might have a similar issue.

If it is a short in the fuel system you would have a blown fuse, or if the fuse malfunctioned, you would smell burning wires. Possibly something in the fuel electrics burnt out and is now open circuit, but i doubt it. Disconnect the fuel line somewhere after the pump (don't know if your pump is in the tank or external) and see if fuel is flowing when you crank.

Just read your 1st post again. You say you can't hear the fuel pump running. Did you use to hear it before this problem? If possible, run wires direct from battery to pump and see if it spins. If you can hear it running like this, try start the car

Glad you got sorted Darren. For next time, I found a good place in Hillcrest called Rugged Africa. Alfred is very conscientious and professional. Call him on 0319421399
