Hello All

I have a friend that would like to install an electric aircon in his Non-toyota vehicle, :shh: (Nissan 1400 bakkie)... can anyone advise if there are such things, and where one could have it fitted in Pretoria area and any idea on price.

THe only aircon that I can think off that will "fit" the 1400 Nissan is the electric unit that was alos aftermarket available for other vehicle's, but I know from people that i knew that it was troublesome and not really effective for the money spent...

I have been considering fitting a Solid State 8amp Aluminium Exchanger or Two inside my air box

ie. like the ones you'll see in an Electric 20' below ambient cool box.

I figure that it could be quite effective and at 8-16amps will draw less and cost less in juice than a gas powered conventional system. :Geek:

Sure it's not gonna chill the watsits of a polar bear but it's gonna be better than my current fan only set-up.

Anyone else considered such a crazy idea :?:

These aftermarket electronic aircons normally struggle to cool anything larger then the cab of a Nissan 1400 bakkie effectively, any bigger cab and it is overpowered.

even some factory fitted aircons battle to keep the big double cabs cool inside. the electric ones i have heard of but never seen the thing in working condition and never heard them to be as efective as the factory fitted ones....

my view a waste of time.....

I had one of those evaporative units in my motorhome. It was pretty useless. It works on the same principle as the farmers water filled canvas bag which they drive around with, hanging from their bullbar. It is dependent on the humidity. In the Namib desert it works well, but in Durban it won't work at all.

I considered fitting one of those units that Ron is referring to in Shorty, my S/C, but decided against it. Apparently, reasonably effective up in the Reef on a dry hot day, but totally useless at the coast or any other humid area. Also, the thought of those miniature droplets depositing themselves all over the cab would probably end up giving a musty smell and probably start corroding things that do not require corroding.
