The spares box & Toolkit for my Hilux

I have been very priveliged to be able to travel lesotho 2 times from different routes. However it has alway been a single vehicle doing some mild offroading SOLO......  Thus as I bought my Hilux I decided to build up a relative complete breakdown kit/Spares box for my Hilux.

IT has taken me now just under 5 year to finally get almost the kit complete, thus my decision to post it here for some valuable input from your side...

Please bear in mind that when viewing the box and everything, my vehicle is as a rule of thumb considered to be the mechanical breakdown assistance vehicle and recovery vehicle of the convoy that is following me.

Ok so here goes the pictures and then a bit of a description of what is actually packed.

In this kit you will notice some funny things, one being the Toyota Silicone. It is used to seal the sump of a 4Y motor. It carries also various bolts and nuts of different shapes and sizes up to towball attaching bolts and nuts. Spare relay's, globes, electrical connectors and wire, Poprivits, and the splitpins. SOme rubber cussions that came off the std suspension and washers ect. Hose clamps and OE manifold studs & nuts basically complete this partiucular little box that fits inside the ammo box.

Here is the seal kit that includes the wheel bearing seal for the front wheel bearings........Some other seals came in a kit when I bought it a while ago when I redid the engine in the garage.

You will notice that there is OE downpipe and flange seals, as well as branch flange seals for the exhaust. Also there is 8 Valve stem seals that do travel with me....

YoH! Johan, that's a comprehensive kit! Anyone travelling with you must surely feel re-assured. (You could open a roadside spares shop on your next trip,  ).
I normally just take along the basics like hose clamps, cable ties, puncture repair kit, mini compressor, spare oil / brake fluid / transmission oil, spark plugs, radiator sealant, fan belts etc and of course a decent lead lamp and a comprehensive tool kit incl. multi-tester and some wire + relays, along with hi-lift, hand winch, ropes, chain, d-shackles, spade, sand ladders .... hang on, ..... I'm not even through yet and I realise that I'm almost as bad as you, except for the valve stem oil seals.
No wonder we need roof carriers and trailers!!
Seriously, I've hardly ever used any of this equipment! We should be looking at reducing the amount of *a* we carry around, .... maybe a plier and some blou-draad will do it. No wonder we achieve such poor fuel economy stats. The bloke that comes up with a breakdown kit that's something like the Swiss army knife is gonna make a fortune!

Mud Dog wrote:No wonder we need roof carriers and trailers!!
Hi Andy,

To be honest I have never used a roofrack or a trailer for any trail or overlanding on my Hilux.... I tend to take only what is needed and load it in the back although it does become a heavy load. Now that dad joins me on trips with the Fortuner the load get shared more evenly and thus we are only 2 per vehicle travelling.

If we do short trips, 300Km or less, I hardly take a thing with... maybe cable ties... cause the other hilux monkey's have got enough spares on them jointly to rebuild a SFA from scratch!

Bretton,

My SFA is the leading, recovery, breakdown and assistance vehicle when we travel, so I it is expected of me to carry all these things..... So i keep my box and tools with the recovery gear in the back om Hilux. Same with the hat and sunglasses, they are always in the car and ready to go at any time.... :D:

Ry julle Hiluxe of Land Rovers was asked my TOY BOX anyway mate we love to help our friends out when their vehicle's break down and to carry all these items is so much cheaper than having to tow your vehicle behind a Landrover from the middle of Africa.

Driving a Hilux is similar to getting married, you never know what to expect, no matter how good a condition you think your Hilux is in, you might fill up with fuel somewhere and there is water in the fuel, then what?

Rather be prepared than look like a fool standing alongside the road with the problem.

Baie nice kit!

Hel. Miskien moet ek ook 'n spanner in my bakkie sit.
