Slow windscreen wipers

Post by Riceburner »

Mine was slow, until I opened up the mechanism. Loosen the 3 screws that hold the motor on. Clean the brass contacts and bend them out a bit. Apply new electtric grease. Walla!!!

I tried the earth and giving the coupling grease where you connect the blades to the motor. This improved it by about 10%.

I'm going to try what you did :)

Miskien is ek verkeerd maar ek verstaan die Cmary se wiper motor werk op die SFA en het meer krag en spoed. Weet iemand of dit waar is?

Hi guys,

While I was busy with the cool air induction mod, I had the wiper motor out. My wipers are also pretty slow, so I have stripped the motor to see whats going on, found 2 faults, the one spring was missing on one of the stator brushes, and the main problem, the grease by the plate brushes has gone hard and has managed to form a layer between the contacts, here the pics:

Main brushes:

Plate brushes jammed with grease:

Other than that the motor is in pretty good nick, expect rust on the one mounting. I'm going to clean it up nicely, coat the fiction parts with lithium grease and she should be back at her best!

We managed to save the tree

Now back to wipers. Quick tip for wiper blades not cleaning windescreen properly.

Take a rag and a bottle of meths, use the meths to clean the rubber on the wiper. They will be good for a little while longer. The meths cleans and softens the rubber.

Agreed, you can also spray silicon lubricant on the windscreen to stop windscreen wipers from juddering.. it also improves the "wipe"...

I used to buy that "C-Thru" stuff, works lekker

I had a big old Audi 500 that had temperamental windscreen wipers, with C-Thru I could drive thru torrential rain without wipers nê :P

The C-Thru stuff is great, but it does not stop your wipers from juddering. Also the Hilux windscreen is a bit steep, and you need to drive at quite a speed for C-Thru to work properly, which is not really possible on a dirt track in the rain. It works best on cars with streamlined windscreens.

I used C-Thru on the visor of my crash helmet when I was still riding motorbikes. C-Thru on the side windows are nice for clear side views in the rain though.

Another cure for juddeing windscreen wipers is to cut a potato in half and rub it on the windscreen, but I dont drive around with potatoes in the back as a rule.
