Trans Lesotho 23 September 2010
Drove across a part of Lesotho this past weekend.
Drove down to Underberg on Thursday and spent Thursday evening in our very nice wood cabin at Rocky Mountain Lodge.
Departed from Rocky Mountain Lodge on Friday morning, and made the stop at the very well stocked Spar in Underberg on the way to Sani Pass. We had lovely weather and could start to marvel at the Drakensberg that we would be travelling into shortly.
Again had a very painless entry into Lesotho on the South African side of the border. The road surface itself in Sani Pass has had extensive work done to it, and it actually in a very good condition. Really did not experience wheel spin once going up the pass. Maybe combination of good road surface and Cooper ST's?
Had a mug of hot chocolate at Sani Top and also enjoyed the view for about an hour.
Then drove through the Sani Flats and over Black mountain pass on towards Mokhotlong and Eastern Central Lesotho. The road surface in in general good condition and we enjoyed the amazing mountain vistas. The only drawback of the day was the tremendous wind that we experienced nearly all the way. Just past Sekokong we stopped for a lunch break and enjoyed the beauty of the mountains before setting of towards Oxbow Lodge past Afriski on the A1.
It was only between Sekokong and Ox-Bow that the road surface was a mix between gravel and broken up tar.
We stayed over at Ox-Bow Lodge on Friday night and enjoyed a hearty supper and a very good breakfast on Saturday morning. Accommodation was clean and service was also rather good.
Saturday I had my biggest surprise of the trip, the Moteng Pass. Probably one of the most beautifull passes I've ever driven, the views where spectacular and unforgetable.
We excited Lesotho through Caledonspoort. Again a painless border crossing.
some pictures to follow very soon

The sheer size of the mountains cannot be captured by any camera.

Nicely done, Heinrich! The Sani Pass is definitely not a trip to be missed. I still need to travel across Lesotho, last time we skirted around the base of Lesotho, also a mind-blowing experience!

F_D for a plattelandse-boerseun mountains like that is amazing. The highest thing on the farm where I grew up was a windpomp. The surface of Sani is currently is excellent condition, the best I've ever seen it.
Thanks Tiaan. Heelwat werk al daar ingesit, en nog so paar items om te doen, dan is die grootste werk gedoen (behalwe as ek 'n body lift laat doen).

Heinrich, this of course simply makes me feel like turning a closed eye to the world here at home & work, and just jump in the car and go travelling. Such a blessed and beautiful experience! ;)

Re: Trans Lesotho 23 September 2010
Heinrich,
