Lesotho Trip Feb 2013
An update on road conditions; Katze, Oxbow, Mokhotlong to Sani Top. The road conditions to the Katse are as they have been for many years, tar, steep and definately low range on the decents to keep the brakes functional. Now the interesting part; Oxbow to Mokhotlong, this was a potholed tar road but it is all dirt road now due to the ever ongoing road works, It is a leisurely drive but will still take a few hours to do the 70 kms. Now, the very interesting part; Mokhotlong to Sani Top, due to the rains much of the road in the valley has been washed away especially where the mountain streams cross the roads and it becomes a choice of which 'boulder line' to take as the sand inbetween has vanished. Ofcourse travelling 'near the edge' is quite scary for the passenger side of the vehicle but as the driver your focus definately does'nt move off the boulder surface. The road works in sections do not help either as it makes it quite tricky. It took all of 4-5 hours to do the 60 kms to Sani Top. The decent down the Sani by comparison is a 'piece of cake' and the road is in good condition considering the rains. Try to avoid the convoys of 'day trippers' coming up the Sani as it can be quite congestive, that seems to happen from 10 onwards in the morning, nothing that a spot of fly fishing in the Himeville area can't cure. I did the trip in a Mahindra 'THAR' (Jeepy) 2.5 turbo diesal 4X4 and it was more than capable with 'steam' to spare
