Clanwilliam - Jamaka - Wuperthal

Post by pietpetoors »

Had a brother/sister weekend. My sister and I went to Clanwilliam for the weekend.
First we attended the opening of an art exhibition by Riette Steenkamp in one of the Clanwilliam churches. Since it only finished after 19h00 and it is a 40 minute drive to the camping site we decided to have dinner in town before we went to the camping site.

In Clanwilliam, in the main street is the "Dam Bistro" . The food is divine, a good place to stop.
(Is actually on the corner of the main road that goes through Clanwilliam to Calvinia and the main street where Spar is in)

From there we headed south to Jamaka to camp.

We arrived at 22h00. Luckily we both have small tents which is easy and quick to pitch.

Next morning we had a good Saturday breakfast and then hiked up the mountain behind the camp site.
It is a steep climb to the trig beacon on the "Wolweberg". Think it is 850 m above sea level. It is 4 hour route there and back and worth the effort. The view is really nice.

The campsite is nice. The bathrooms were relatively clean. There are solar water heaters at all bathrooms.
When we were there, there were only 3 other occupied sites.

I can see in summer there will not be much grass, in winter there is thin grass. There is lots of shade and it is right next to the river.

Something I strongly disliked is the amount of Black Wattle trees in and around the camp site. I know they cannot cut off all of it because probably more than 90% of the camp site shade is provided by these trees. But if they cut off every 2nd one, it wont make a difference and then there are thousands of small Black Wattle trees which can easily be cut down. This is all next to a river which means that because they cannot control their trees, they also make it the problem of everybody downstream.

The farm is at http://jamaka.co.za/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Sunday morning we had an early breakfast, packed up camp and then took the road further South until we reached the Algerië gravel road. We turned left and headed towards Wuperthal over the Uitkyk pass and via Sanddrif.

It was a nice cool day with clouds in the sky which made this beautiful area even more beautiful.
On the road between Sanddrif and Wuperthal we passed 13 vehicles of which only 2 were not Toyotas. One was a a Ford Ranger and the other a Pajero SWB. Of the 11 remaining there were 1 Prado and 1 Fortuner, the rest were all Hiluxes.
