Can I get a visa for tanzania on the northern border of malawi? Has anyone been that route?

No Tanzania does not give visa's to South Africans at the border anymore. You have to apply in person to their High Commision in Pretoria, where they'll tell you how much it costs. Then you pay the prescribed fees into their Standard Bank account and then you go back and again stand in the queue for the interview.
