Some of the W/C club members did the Matroosberg 4x4 route on Saturday and boy was it slippery and wet of the rain and snow but well worth it

Maybe some of the other members can post some pics of the route itself because its a bit difficult to drive and take photos at the same time

Looks great. How long does the route take up? Do you need any special equipment? Planning on doing it next snow fall but haven't driven in snow before.

You should go this weekend, you can feel the chill in the air allready

Get there early, very, very early. There is a one way system on the road (1300 turn around time if I recall correctly) and generally after a few vehicles have been up it starts to get much more challenging and people then spin their way up the obstacles, making it worse. Also there are lots of people without a clue going up that can make taking the tougher sections more interesting

I put the hilux name to shame this weekend.

We booked in to Matroosberg reserve this weekend. Been planning this year after year, but snow and our schedule never coincides. Last week Monday I checked the predicted -12deg weather and booked.. rain or shine we going.

Good thing we did... we woke up to beautiful fresh snow Sat morning.
Ground level snow everywhere, with it being topped up periodically during the day... into the afternoon as well.
Even nicer was that there was not alot of visitors , so we could enjoy and explore the fresh snow.

So much snow fell, that the 4x4 trail was actually close.

Sunday morning was predicted to be even colder. We anticipated more snow, but woke up to a stream of cars at reception already... but clear skies and no hint of snow.
The snow that survive the thawing process that started overnight , was now more icy that snow.
Bakkie's windows all covered in ice, not even water could come out of windshield sprayers... everything frozen. It took almost 20 min of idling to get temp gauage to more above minimum line so i could turn on heater inside to try and thaw from inside out.

Then I heard the 4x4 trail is open.
Full steam ahead i tackled it. first few corners ok... then i come across a hilux parked on side of trail.
Around that corner uneven rock causing somewhat articulation. Not heavy , even by my novice standards (i'm more of a sand offroad guy). But bakkie slips and slides. There around the corner, also amarok parked with rocks behind the wheels.
Lady tells us another bakkie struggling further up.

Slippery rocks, steep mountain behind me, i decided to abort. Reversing, a single cab +-2005'ish ranger comes up behind . Now i'm stuck between rock and a ranger. He managed to get past me. I'm worried about the brakes making a funny vibrating noise while reversing down the mountain. Managed to find bit of a parking area to turn around... tail between the legs...

Spent rest of day playing around with my brother in law with his 4x2 fortuna.
