Henties 2017 - competition

Namibia Henties 2017 – 2018 Trip Report

Day one (21st December 2017) - left home 03.15am. The stretch of road to be covered for the day was Brackenfell to Mariental, 1199km. With 2 over excited kids in the car we managed to do minimal stops en-route, one for a road side brunch and the other at Noordoewer border crossing. We arrived at the border crossing just before midday. Between toilet breaks, not getting all our passports returned and extremely under enthusiastic officials on the Namibian border post, it took us about 45mins to hit the road again. Next stop – Mariental. We arrived at our destination for the evening in the midst of a thunderstorm. Knackered and hungry, we headed to Tahiti’s for some grub and back to our accommodation for a good bath and some sleep.

Day two – left Mariental at about 07h00. Destination – Henties bay (approx. 650km). First pit stop – the traditional Tropic of Capricorn photo. Due to it being our travel companions first time in Namibia, we opted for a “more scenic” gravel route to Henties. We turned off the main road just before Rehoboth, and followed the dry gravel road through Klein Aub, over Remshoogte Pass, into Solitaire. Murphy’s Law, with only one spare tyre on board, we had a blow out just after Solitaire. Dust & scorching heat we managed to get the tyre changed in no-time, back en-route to Henties, over yet another pass and through an amazing canyon, Kuiseb Pass & Canyon. Arrival time in Henties was late afternoon.

The Henties arrival was “one for the books”. Our accommodation was, let’s say “slightly different” to what we had envisaged. Our hosts were however amazing, made us feel at home, and needless to say the kids loved the zoo (6 cats, 2 dogs, chickens, ducks, tortoises, a penguin and 2 snakes, one a spitting cobra) which was to be our home / ground zero for the next fortnight.

The next two weeks held many exciting excursions of its own. These were, to name a few, travelling many kilometres and catch the famous Henties fish, not so lucky for us in that department. Mile 108, drinking the “boot” beer in Swakopmund, climbing the amazing dunes of the Namib (well some of us at least), a visit to the “dead sea’, new year’s day braai on the beach and a visit to all the bars we could find in Henties 

We tried to source a spare type in Henties, but with silly season in full swing and crazy prices, we opted for new tyre for almost R 1000 cheaper at TWT Windhoek.

Day 14 – Departed Henties at 03h15. Destination the SA border (1159km), via Windhoek to collect the tyre. Arrived in Windhoek to find a lekker special on a second-hand tyre for R600. From here, another long haul to the border, where we would spend the evening. Arrived late afternoon in 43deg sweltering heat, at a gem of a place for our evenings rest. Met up with some friends we haven’t seen in a couple of years and had an awesome meal.

Day 15 – Departed Noordoewer Guest Lodge at 8am, destination, home sweet home (670km). Had a considerably better border crossing experience this time round, arrived safely home late afternoon.

All in all, it was an awesome trip, one with old friends, new friends & neighbours.

Eish... how jealous i get everytime someone posts henties trip photos.

THis has been on my to do list every year since my first SFA back in 2003... :D:
Every time i threaten, then it does not happen. Something else always crops up.

But i have my eye on it for 2019. Hopefully this time round it will happen.

If i may ask, approximately how much should one budget for such an excursion.
Just so that i can get ball park figure of the saving i need to do. I will have to add some cause i have 3 kids, eldest on high school as well so basically adult.

Nice Namibia a great place we were there for the first time, over december, Swakop and to the South.

Really beautiful piece of the world and really nice people.

Shaakir, from my experiance depending fuel price but budget on R2 a kilometer and campsites all roughly charge R180-R200 per person per night, so take it from there, thats what I did and my fuel and camping was roughly spot on.

Not sure what your fuel consumption is, i got overall up and down 6.5km/lt, we also stayed in selfcatering. we came to about R 35k all and all(my petrol alone was about R9k). this include food, coffee everything. and we are a family of 4.

I get on average 10km/lt... long road or local... so i think I will be slightly better off in the fuel bill department. But will have to buy more food... eish that eldest of mine.. big growing boy :D:

R35-40K not to bad for 2 week trip. Have to start saving now already for end 2019/2020 summer vacation.
