Well, was not feeling so bright today. I ended up only removing useless items and will see in the week what happens and how much time I have.
Yes I am going to build my tube bumper. I have no plans yet, only a few ideas and will measure and fit as I go along. Hope it all turns out well at the end.

Got a chance to do a bit of work today. Just made up the center section and tacked them in place. Cut the tubing from the old bull bar and think that they may fit for what I have planned. Will see tomorrow.

JA MAN! Beginne goed lyk. Sê vir my jy gaan hom soveel oop los voor as moontlik - lyk lekker aggresief.

So ja kom ons sien.

Well I havent had much time to do much this past weekend as I went to town and that takes a whole day. I have made some molds for covering the open spaces in front. I got some flicker lights and a set of driving lights. This weekend I will make the fiber glass pieces and try and spray everything finished. I am frenching the number plate and flicker lights, the driving lights will be mounted on the lower pipe with cut outs in the face plate.

The fiberglass work that I do is self taught and maybe not exactly the right method, but it works for me. I make two different types of molds, one is a once of and if need be you can break the casting out and then I make one out of fiberglass taken off the part or a plug made from wood or plaster of paris or anything else you want to use. The second one is if you want to make more than one of the item. These that I am using now are for once of.
I have used masonite and pine for these, they are the same as the part that I want. The smoother the mold the better the finish on the part and the less work to finish off the part. One must remember to taper the shapes to help remove the finished part. Once the mold is finished I use varnish to seal the wood. Then you must use releasing agent, applied at least 3 times to make sure it is covered right, leave to dry a few hours between coats( apply with sponge).
The pics show the release wax and the molds with the wax on. Also the bumper that still needs to be sanded so it can be sprayed.

Well I got the casting made today. The first photos are the molds with gel coat in ( they say one does not get a good finish when gel coat is applied by brush, but I have not had any problems yet). Then I put the fiber glass chop strand in while the gel coat is still tacky, then I put the resin on ( make sure you get all the air bubbles out otherwise it will weaken the casting. The air bubbles are white.) When the fiber glass is dry one can use a long wedge of wood to remove the part from the mold, sand the excess off before removing from the mold. Then one can sand the finished part and spray them. Sand with water paper and make sure the release agent is all off before spraying as the paint will peel off the part if there is still wax on it.

These are some pics of air vents and a bonnet scoop that I made a while ago. I still have to finish them and fit them. These molds Imade from fiberglass so they can be used again. They are basic molds and need a lot of finishing when they are cast. I want to use them to see if I can get a better air flow under the bonnet.

Yes Shane, I started years ago doing up street cars, fitting spoilers and all sorts. Fitted a spoiler to a Toyota 1600 about 2 years ago for my stepson. It did not fit properly and had to be cut and rejoined. I will look and see if I still have pics and post them.

Nice job so far Roger!
and had to be cut and rejoined
That's one of the benefits of fibreglass .... can be patched, repaired and joined. Have had to repair torn or damaged pool shells before .... for the internal finish of the repair we applied pigmented gel-coat with a roller (the type that has the short haired carpet-like surface) .... thinned the gel-coat with a little acetone so that it would 'flow' and smooth better. Worked well, but we had to apply at least two coats for coverage and a smooth, even finish.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Ok, so this morning I fitted the bumper to the truck and fitted the driving lights, all connected. Unfortunately I don't have enough black paint to spray the fiberglass parts so will do it soon.

I found some pics of the front spoiler that I did. The sides came out too far so I cut them off and rejoined them. Galvanised plate on the inside with pop rivets holding the parts together. Fiber glassed outside and finished it off. Sprayed the same colour as the car.

Thank you for all the nice comments. I am lucky to have some talent, but through life I have never had a lot of money to pay others to do work for me so I looked and read and tried until I got things going the right way. From there one improves as you go along. I still need to learn lots of things. I have always said the if a person wants to do something you can do it, so anyone on this forum can do the same if they put their minds to it. There are some very talented people on this forum that I could learn a lot from. We are all here to give advice and tips and help our fellow members where we can, so I will most certainly help where I can. Thank you for all being so nice and God bless you all.

Right today I managed to finish spraying the fiber glass parts and fitted the flicker lights. Fitted all parts to bumper and connected flicker lights. Just need to adjust driving lights and will be finished. :taunt:

Roger VERY nicely done.

And thank you for taking the time to post photos of the process and typing up the steps. May just print this out and keep it for the day I want to try it ....

Been playing in the garage myself today - making a slide rack for my two solar panels. Metal pulling skew after welding did mess me about "a bit" ..... o-well, past that hurdle and can do the side panels tomorrow. then to do the mounting. After that I want to spend some time on a decent wind/branch deflector at the leading edge .... painting .... wiring .....

still a LOT of stuff to get done and our trip is getting ever closer.

promise to keep taking photos, and will do a proper write up later.
