Tig Welding

Post by louis fourie »

So, I bought myself a new toy, which I never used before, and I have a lot of questions. Here they are:

1) Can I use CO2 for a shield gas, or must I use Argon?
2) What amps is a good starting point for TIG and for what plate thickness?
3) On the photo below, what is the 2s and 5s switch for - manual is really not that clear.

And I will have many more questions :D:

Nice wish i had one of those toy's

I think the best way to find out is to practice with it and see what does what

maybe just read the manual first :P

Gaan kyk na welding tips and tricks .com

Jy gaan veraltyd bly wees as jy eers n tig het .

Afrox in Dykor str silverton .

Hul groot tanks ens is daar .

Hoop jy kom reg daar anders laat weet .

Sal laat weet of ek iets uitgerig kry

Vanmiddag by Cosmo vir my 'n Lincon Air Flow meter gekoop  en so bietjie gespeel vanaand.

My gas :yahoo:

en my eerste weld - hande kry so 'n bietjie warm, want jy stoot die gun ipv trek soos met MMA, so die weld is nie te reguit nie  , maar OK vir 'n eerste keer (95A en so 7 l/min gasvloei).

So 'n bietjie terugvoer:

Hi Louis

Ek is nou weer terug op jou ou post. Ek wil nou baie graag n TIG welder koop vir n paar goetertjies wat ek wil maak. As ek die adendorff masjien koop http://www.adendorff.co.za/ProductDetails.aspx?id=630" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; het ek gas bottels nodig?

Dit is nogal heelwat makliker as TIG dink ek...

...edit

Hey gus my 2cw. You can use co2 but that is called MAG welding (metal active gas) it is used for welding low alloy steels. But the most common gas used is Argon and for us that just weld on the odd project and want to weld a veriety of material I would suggest argon.

Ek sal nie bo 4mm gaan nie anders gaan jy tungsten rods vreet.

Fot the okes with the scratch welders. Your tungsten electrode usage can be slightly reduced by using a slihktly thikker rod and skarpening your rods to a slighter angle like 15 degrees instead of the normal 25 degrees. You can alse bring the electrode in closer to the nozzel to about 4mm protrusion to get a better cooling effect whete it is possible. This is difficult when welding in corners and so on.

Iff you are getting contamination in the start of your weld make sure to purge the nozzel before starting sufficiently. Remember argon is heavier than gas so it does run out the nozzel when you stop welding. That 2 seconds mentioned earlier sound good.

The above Inverter welding machine, on the MMA setting can weld stick in normal steel, stainless steel, aluminum, cast iron rods.
On the TIG setting using Argon gas you can weld normal steel and stainless steel, you cannot weld aluminum as it is a DC weld, you need AC to weld TIG aluminum.

The 2s and 5s are post flow gas times, 2s is 2 seconds post flow gas time and 5s is 5 seconds post flow gas time.
This means when TIG welding you finish a weld by releasing the foot pedal trigger or torch trigger, you do not take the torch away or lift it away from the weld, the post flow gas will still shroud the welded area with gas thus cooling the torch head and weld area keeping out any oxygen which will contaminate the weld.

Lots of free welding tips available on you tube.
Patience and a steady hand are required to weld TIG.
