4Y EFi HP Pump Installation Upgrade

Post by Mr_B »

Hi guys,

After I finished rebuilding my 4Y engine I week ago, I had the misfortune of the original HP pump packing up... it was a real cheapy, so this was not a surprise. Well i took Hoppy's advice and went for a new Bosch original. I was never totally happy with the HP pump installation, it always seemed to allow vibration through the chassis no matter how I tweaked the mounts(many attempts... really... no BS Bennie really... ) and getting the pump in and out was very cumbersome... so decided to make a steel plate to fit the pump on, with decent rubber mounts to reduce noise/vibration. The other consideration was security, with these Bosch pumps costing well over R1000, I wanted to make nicking it a bit more difficult!

Ok Richard I hear you... where the peekchas?

Well here the peekchas:

The original installation with old pump:

The new steel plate with Bosch HP pump fitted:
Note the rubber mounting, they isolate the noise and vibration much better...

Hanging in position, fuel lines and electrical in place:

The plate secured against the chassis, everything out of harms way:

This is the prototype(using 2mm steel cause I cant bend thicker steel at home), I plan on making another one, plate, out of 3mm+ steel so that it's even more rigid, but this one works perfectly, the pump is really quite... really quite... no BS Bennie really!

The way I sort out the noise was to take out my main tank, loosen up the fuel sender unit, take it out, bend a new 8mm fuel feeder pipe and took the original 6mm totally out and replacing it with the new 8mm pipe. Now no noise. If I open the door, turn my ignition, the pump prime for 2sek I hear it, after that no noise.

I might have to do this too Louis - there's a lot of slurping going on with mine

Britney didn't have a slurping prob, just a very noisy el cheapo pomp

Louis I did the same fuel tank pickup mod, using 10mm ID steel pipe, so the feed to the filter/pump is 100%. In my final design I will probably add a LP Pump(with seperate on/off toggle switch) between the filter and HP pump, for any really serious obstacles.

Richard, if you would like I can have 2 plates cut and bent, one for you, fitment is simple, the installation is out of harms way... blah blah blah...

I could be wrong, but I do not think there is no need for a 2nd pump. Mine is in like this for 6 months. :D:

I have seen a few pro(yes Bennie yours are pro too!) EFi installations with this LP pump mod, supposedly it helps with extreme uphill climbs, when the fuel demand is at max. My good friend Craig's lux has this mod, the LP pump is wired to the 4x selector so the LP pump only operates in 4WD.

Please mate, cos I can't do my 50mm body lift with the pomp in its current position; your mod will be ideal for keeping it up out of sight. :P

I'm also not convinced that an LP is required, surely isolating it will put tremendous strain on the HP Pomp :?: :?:

At Boegoeberg she performed great given some pretty steep and very long gradients, though I never let the tank go below half

We can fit it after the lift, to get the mounting position right on the chassis!

I would like to do the lift and see whats involved, cause it really can't be that difficult and the pro's charge more than I can afford right now! Dadz Toy can be the guinea pig!

We fitted Cassie and Riaan's fuel pumps similarly (with the renault exhaust mountings   :? ) and they are also very quiet.
pump.jpg
pump bracket.jpg

What we found with Cassie's setup was that when the rubber pump running between the pump and HP filter touched the chassis rail it made a big noise by simply rerouting it not to touch anything the setup went all quite.

With the return from the fuel rail running into the surge tank we installed there is alko very little cavatation noise even when going uphill.

Cassie please take a pic of the final setup on your van as I cant find the ones I took on my HDD :? :?

No problem Rich... got some new tricks to implement on Dadz Toy... we'll have her running 100% in no time!

I'll see if I can get you an offcut of pipe for an induction mod today, I've still got the extra stainless pipe as well! I bought a bimetal saw to make to hole as well!

Quick Technical question for you boffs:

I need to install a "Lamda Sensor" (? not sure about spelling) to power up a AFR Gauge that I've aquired.

So; what does one look like, where do I get and how many pennies and where do you install it on our EFi jobbies :?: :?:

The lambda sensor gets installed in the exhaust manifold, pretty close to the top by the head... if you have your lux dyno'd Ferroli, they mod the manifold for you, because they always dyno with a lambda probe, after the dyno, they remove the probe and seal off the hole with a decent bolt and some fire gum... so get your lux dyno'd by them and you get the hole on the manifold as an added bonus!

We did the Bosch HP Fuel Pomp Upgrade today on Dadz Toy :P

Now I've got the Generic (Mr.Turbo Pomp) as a spare, I'll feel a lot happier when I drive up to Namib just nou.

We had a 2mm mounting plate made up and use the lekker mounts Bennie

Gotta say that the Bosch is much much quieter than the generic. :P

Here's the Peekchaz (of course)
