Baviaans - combined E/C & W/C GTG.

Post by Mud Dog »

We have spoken of this before and suggested some time early in 2017. Well 2017 is here and we are looking at organising this as a joint GTG between the W/ Cape and E/Cape guys.

We are looking at doing this sometime over a long weekend somewhere in March / April. So let's first get some dates fixed and then we can start a list of who will be joining. Ideally we should make it a 3 day / two night sleep over trip.

Since we don't have any long weekends over those months except for the Easter w/end (14 15 16 17 April), we will have to decide whether to do it then (it will be busy) or if we opt for the w/end of 18 19 March - the Monday 20th is a school holiday and Tuesday the 21st is human rights day.

Suggestions?

Indeed! SWAMBO is unemployed at present but I'm still hoping to recover financially before then

March could be difficult with the school holidays, April would be better from a Vaalie point of view.

Ahhh the Isuzu 4x2er has rattled and woken the Toy boys up :lmao: Fantastic mud dog for getting the ball rolling.

I'm in for March 17 -21 or April 14-17 ( I start standby on 18 April so I won't be able to recover you 4x4 chaps after that date   ).

With the Western/Eastern/Northern /Southern members it could turn out to be a big event.

Looks like the Easter weekend is more favourable? (If so, we will need to make bookings because they will be busy.)

Maybe we can already start making a list of who is keen and what dates are better suited ..... Easter w/end (14 15 16 17 April) - OR - the w/end of 18 19 March - the Monday 20th is a school holiday and Tuesday the 21st is human rights day.

The plan is to sleep over 2 nights in the kloof. Any suggestions on Camping or accommodation for those two nights?

Add your name to the list ...

Andy & Sheridene - (either weekend will do but Easter might be better)

Tertius, Baviaans is what was originally spoken of and the feeling I've been getting is that there are guys that specifically want to do this route. It's far, I know, but that's why we want to do it over a long weekend so that there is enough time for travelling to and fro from both E/Cape and W/Cape ends.

Thanks Niel, maybe that's where we should spend the first night - maybe use either Willowmore or Uitspan as a rendezvous point to allow for the different arrival times from different areas, and then move as a group from there. I was initially thinking to use Willowmore but whichever place we use we won't be able to move too far on the first day because some guys from further affield might arrrive quite late. If we use Uitspan, it gives the earlier arrivals an opportunity to set up camp for the night instead of sitting waiting and doing nothing at a coffee shop or something.

Good evening all
I have also been active with the 4x4community group and friends from PE wrt the Baviaans outing. Perhaps a joint adventure could be combined to make it more memorable.

Preliminary itinerary is as follows:

Fri 14 Apr-
Meet at Makro PE 07:30
Leave in Convoy toward Kareedouw
Breakfast at Kareedouw
Travel over Kouga mountains on Baviaans/Kouga trail ending at Doringkloof.
Set up camp and braai.

Sat 15th -
There is a Gr4 trail at doringkloof for those interested going up to the communications tower. Shale rock make tyre damage a real possibility.
Leave doringkloof after lunch and travel into Baviaans from the western gate.
Travel up to Rooihoek and set up camp.
Braai for dinner.

Sun 16th -
Depart from Rooihoek and transverse mountain ranges up to Bruintjieskraal.
Set up camp and I will make potjie for those interested.

That sounds like a plan Craig. I've just had too much on my plate of late while at the same time trying to get back to normal (if that's possible :D: ) after an op. Just have not got around to putting something together, so the community organised event might be a blessing.

Good day all ye members.

Here is the FINAL Itinary kindly planned by Bushfire for the Baviaans kloof outing.

Baviaans Trip Easter weekend 14-17 Apr 2017

Fri 14th Apr (PE to Doornkloof approx. 182km)

1. 07:00 Meet at Makro parking lot
2. 07:30 Depart on freeway toward Kareedouw.
3. Meet up at turn off to Baviaans/Kouga trail on R62 just before Kareedouw (33° 56.6953’ S 24° 18.9620’ E)
4. Navigate the back roads toward the start of the trail in convoy.
5. Enter the Baviaans/Kouga experience trail (Trail is rated a mild 2) I’m not certain what the trail costs but please allow approx. R250 per vehicle.
6. At approx. 10:30am stop on top of the mountain somewhere along the route for Breakfast/Padkos/Snack/Coffee (please cater for yourself)
7. Travelling times can vary drastically depending on the group size etc, but I expect to arrive at the Doringkloof Bushcamp campsite between 14:00 and 17:00 (33° 33,736’ S 24° 04,994’ E)
8. Set up camp and relax.
9. Doornkloof rates are R90pppn for adults and R50pppn for children (11 years and under, kids under 2 are free)
10. I have paid a 50% deposit for 7 adults (R315) to secure our booking
11. I have booked the lapa area for our group but need to confirm numbers with them by no later than Fri 31st March 2017
12. We will braai at the lapa communal area on Friday evening. (please cater for yourself)
13. Wood is available to buy at Doornkloof.

Sat 15th Apr (Doorkloof to Bergplaas approx. 55km)

1. Your choice if you would like to make breakfast before we depart.
2. 10:00 Depart from Doringkloof in an Easterly direction along the R332 toward Patensie
3. Enter the Baviaans Reserve at the Western gate(33° 35,4719’ S 24° 10,6405 E) (according to the baviaans website we should not have to pay permit fees as we’re staying in the reserve on Sat evening, but you never know until you get there. Permits are R20per person and R10 per child 11 and younger)
4. I am trying to get permission to stop and swim at Rooihoek. (33° 39,8764’ S 24° 24,5595’ E) This will be confirmed later.
5. If we do not stop at Rooihoek to swim then we will find a suitable spot to stop for snacks/coffee on the route.
6. Travel up to Bergplaas house/cottage (33° 37,8330’ S 24° 29,1521’ E)
7. I have paid the full amount for 6 adults (R393) to secure our booking.
8. There is a sliding scale for the accommodation so I would need final numbers before I can confirm costs but work on approx. R70pppn
9. I will collect moneys from those going and edit my booking as the system won’t allow anyone else to book on the same night at Bergplaas.
10. It has 12 bunk beds and they have said we can pitch a tent also if we require extra space.
11. We will braai on Sat evening again but I’m told there is a full kitchen if anyone wants to make other food.

Sun 16th Apr (Bergplaas to Heroncliff approx. 30km)

1. I would like to depart relatively early on Sun morning as we don’t have tents etc to pack up and I would like to get an early start on the potjie.
2. 08:00 Depart from Bergplaas hut in an Easterly direction along the R332 toward Patensie
3. Exit the Baviaans Reserve at the Eastern gate(33° 39,4563’ S 24° 32,2664’ E)
4. We can stop at Komdomo so people can have a look but I would like to get to Heroncliff as early as possible.
5. Arrive at Heroncliff (33° 44,3748’ S 24° 37,5554’ E) and set up camp
6. I have paid a deposit of 50% which is R300 for 10 adults (R600 in Total = R60pppn) to secure our booking.
7. I will be making a curry pork potjie for dinner with rice. Anyone who would like some please let me know ahead of time. It will be R50 per person.
8. Those who would like to braai or cater for themselves you are welcome to do so.

Mon 17th Apr (Heroncliff to PE/EL approx. 100km to PE and 400km to EL)

1. On Monday everyone for themselves.
2. I will be packing up and heading to Padlangs Farm Stall (33° 43,4368’ S 24° 45,5252’ E) for breakfast before heading home. They are famous for their Farmer breakfast

Some important notes:

1. I will not tolerate any form of alcohol consumption whilst driving on this trip. If you want to drink and drive then please find another group to join. Once at camp we will all relax and have a beer or two.
2. The Eastern Cape is experiencing a drought at the moment and the veld is mostly dry. If you are a smoker, you will have to make provision to extinguish your butts within your vehicle. No stompies are to be tossed out of the vehicle.
3. NO LITTERING
4. Standard convoy rules will apply and we will discuss these on arrival.
5. You are by no means bound by this itinerary and are welcome to deviate from it as you please.
6. The waypoints given are taken off Google Earth. I hope they are correct.
7. Total estimated distance from PE back to PE is approx. 370km. Please make sure you have enough fuel as these small town’s petrol stations may be closed on the public holidays.

If you require any further info or just want to ask questions I haven’t already answered then please feel free to contact me on my cell oh8tree 6double7 tree91too

Regards
Juan

Hi Craig, I'm still interested but it looks like we will have 0/seas visitors (exact days still to be confirmed), so it looks like we might have to skip this one. Gonna have to fly this one by the seat of my pants. :winkx:

I'm very keen still, finances not looking to promising. Waiting to see what our bonus is going to be like, holding thumbs...

Is the trip doable with an off road trailer in tow? I'm not rigged for a bakkie only trip currently.

Seems I'll have to install a new clutch as well before towing the trailer anywhere

Just a taste of our trip. The group were very impressed with Tony's set up. Unfortunately Tony could not continue due to a front suspension problem and had to leave after the first camp. All enjoyed themselves. My 4x2 did the whole journey without diff lock. Great learning experience and great group of friends.

Yes guys I have to really give credit to Craig for the effort and successful drive he did in his 2x4 Isuzu. He was really on the backfoot attempting and completing the 4x4 trail from Karedouw over the mountains into the Baviaans.Firstly in a bloody Isuzu and secondly, it being a 2x4.Well done Craig.

I joined the group and really enjoyed the company of a new group of like-minded friends, driving in different vehicles.I had the only Hilux on the trail and was lucky to have a v6 Landcruiser to keep the Toyota flag flying.
Unfortunately,The link arm connecting the stabilizer arm to the strut on my Hilux broke off and punctured the LHS cv boot on the front axle.
This threw a spanner in the spokes for me.
I decided to rather exit the Baviaans the next day and to travell lightly and make my way home.I was not going to put any more strain on my damaged front cv by attempting to engage 4x4 to climb any more trails.

After exiting the Baviaans ,I stopped at my brother in law who farms near Hankey. I loosened the RHS link arm on the syspention and tied the stabilizer up above the syspention to prevent the damaged link gouging into the lhs side shaft.
I spent an evening braaing with the in -laws and proceeded home the next day without any further hastles.

Thanks to the PE crowd who did all the planning of the route and the bookings of the various overnight spots.Great to meet you guys and I'm certain we will travell together again.
'
My trip was short lived but really enjoyable.THANKS guys.
