E/Cape YE GTG

We are planning on doing the Moordenaars Kop trip on the 9th Dec. Put this date aside and make a note.

The trail itself is not very challenging but very scenic, so will be suitable for over-landers as well. There's a shallow crossing over the Kei that's easy enough but there's another more challenging one further down as an alternative for the guys that want to work the rust out of their suspensions. There are a couple of steeper sections climbing the kop, but again over-lander friendly.

There is place to camp for those that want to sleep over and come back the next day, but it's also not that far to do it as a day trip for those that don't.

Dylan can post the finer details.

Would be nice to join. But I drive a Jimny and Grand Vitara :shock2:

The Jimny will be fine since the trail is over-lander friendly with escape routes. It's a far way for you, but you would be welcome. :winkx:

Not worried about the trail, I’m worried that the badge has an ‘S’ on and not the 2 Ovals Image

Well in the group so far we have 4 x Hilux, 1 x Cruiser, 1 x Landy, 1 x Range Rover, 1 x Nissan and 1 x unknown. The Susie will be welcome. :D:

Looking at your profile pic however, it looks very low to the ground and those side steps might hook here and there.

Looks can be deceiving.

Ground clearance increased by 40mm lift (iron man suspension) and bigger BFG tyres gave me another 20mm. Total is 250mm clear underneath and I have every bash plate a Jimny can think of. Ive never driven a trail in the Eastern Cape where my belly scraped. Those steps are rock sliders Image

Looks good. The trail can be a bit rocky in places, so you might just need those bash plates if you decide to join. If you do, you'd either have to get very early start or come up on the Friday evening and sleep over. How many would you be?

It is Jimny friendly. There are some points I have skipped in anticipation of a swollen Kei River. Should it be passable we will do it. It is within the scope of a std 4x4 and for everything else there’s winches and snatch ropes......

There is a trail fee of R150 per vehicle. We will be departing from the old Kei Bridge border post at 8am sharp. We will do a light tea at Moordenaars Kop historical site.
We should be starting lunch around 12 leaving at 2.
If we make good time and the river is impassable we may stay and talk a bit of crap as the out route is fairly easy and quick.
See you all there...

What you do for lunch is up to you. There should be enough time to braai if you have a gas braai, otherwise bring a packed lunch or something that can be easily / quickly prepared. (I'm thinking hot-dogs. :D: )

Also important to mention is that as part of the club's "give back" philosophy each club member will recieve R150 in cash. We decided that instead of a gift or voucher, this year would be cash for the members to do with as they please (you can pay the trail fee with this if you like). We will just need you to sign a receipt form for club accounting purposes. Thanks.

We met at the Kei bridge as planned (one of us was a 'bit' late due to a late night before :D: ). This is looking up at the trail area from the bridge. The arrow shows a section of the trail going up the valley.
IMG_1168.jpg
The land owner is very close to the bridge so we paid our trail fees and were on our way. Close to the river with the kop in the background.
IMG_1176.jpg
It wasn't long before we started climbing.
IMG_1179.jpg
Some sections were a lot steeper than others. This one at about 25° was not the worst, neither in terms of gradient, loose gravel or rocky surface. (Blame the photographer, my daughter).
IMG_1191.jpg
This was looking back at our starting point (arrow), probably taken from the section arrowed in the first pic.
IMG_1198.jpg
Zooming in from the same position. (BTW This was taken with a Canon Powershot point and shoot.)
IMG_1199.jpg
The 'monument' on top of the kop.
IMG_1207.jpg
The story as I understand it is that during one of the many skirmishes of the Frontier wars, a small contingent of British soldiers were lured up onto the kop and then surrounded and forced off the cliff to their deaths by an overwhelming force of Xhosa warriors. At some point the promontory was named Moordenaars Kop and stones with the soldiers names were carved into stones and placed as a memorial. Although weathered, most are still clearly legible.
IMG_1210.jpg
IMG_1211.jpg
IMG_1213.jpg
The view from the top is spectacular up and down the river valley. (the arrow shows the return trail from the back of the kop)
IMG_1221.jpg
(Arrow shows our starting point in the distance)
IMG_1219.jpg
Zoomed in with that same point 'n shoot
IMG_1225.jpg
IMG_1228.jpg
Some of the group standing near the cliff edge
IMG_1226.jpg
.... and the view straight down off the edge.
IMG_1227.jpg
The descent around the back of the kop was more gradual and fairly wooded around the track, so no pics until we came upon a tree fallen across the trail. It was multi-stemmed and a huge blockage. (the guys had already been cutting when this pic was taken)
IMG_1237.jpg
There was no way around it as there was an embankment either side of the track. Fortunately Gary had a chainsaw, but not being very sharp it took about 2 hours to get through the bulk of it.
IMG_1239.jpg
Time was now against us (3.30pm) and we had still wanted to braai next to the river for lunch - some were getting hungry. Dylan decided to push the remaining blockage down the trail with his stinger (bulldozer).
IMG_1238.jpg
IMG_1242.jpg
IMG_1241.jpg
IMG_1244.jpg
The video clips above are Dylan punching through. The branches didn't all move as planned and we attached a tow rope to the back of Dylan's Rangie and pulled the rest clear.
IMG_1248.jpg
Some more cutting to make it easier and avoid vehicle damage, and we were on our way again. Tony coming through ....
IMG_1254.jpg
IMG_1256.jpg
Back down at river level we had a nice flat flood-plain to relax a bit and braai. Some made use of the river to cool off.
IMG_1268.jpg
IMG_1269.jpg
IMG_1270.jpg
On our way again, climbing over a spur.
IMG_1280.jpg
The wind had come up strong and suddenly with a bit of rain here and there as well. Because of this and the time lost (now already later afternoon) as well as the higher than normal river level, it was decided to abandon the river crossing section and bug out along the road next to the river.

It was a lovely scenic outing that was enhanced by the good spirit of all. Thanks guys for a great day.

Was your tyre able to be repaired with a gator, Tony?

Andy.I think it,s time for a new set and I am considering fitting the new General AT3 .I have had such good use from the General AT's so I believe thats the way to go.Luckily I have a spare set of identical rims so I will keep the older tyres for driving in the bush as we did last weekend.

The tyre I am certain can be repaired with a gator but I dont want to chance long trips with it.

Fantastic trip report and pictures, does that trail cater for 4x2's or not advisable. My baviaans trip on the 4x4 trail was nothing to write home about. Did the trail without engaging difflock.

Hi Craig. I always say not to underestimate the capabilities of a 2x4 with diff lock, but this one can be a bit challenging for your Isuzu in places although there are escape / alternative routes to most of the worst tracks. So ja, I think you should be able to do it.

Where you might have a problem is ground clearance if you want to do the river crossing trail, but as it was we never got to do that anyway because the water level was a bit on the high side after the rains and it was already late in the day with some rain starting to fall (we didn't want to get caught short doing water recoveries that late in the day).

Suitable tyres would also be of help. Have a good spare with you (ask Tony). Being vigilant to avoid sharp rocks will get you through unscathed besides a few slip-cuts in the tread. :winkx:
