Just don't drive out to the trail. Camp site is seperate. Entrance to the trail is on that R363, not on the Lambertsbaai road.GI Jane wrote:Yes, I have a GPS, and have just found the co-ordinates in the Drive out Trail guide, thanks...

Eric thanks, but I already have a GPS, and Oregon 550 that I bought a while ago and still trying to figure out how to use it properly. Problem is forget to mess around with it when I'm home and suddenly when I'm ready for a trip remember I still have'nt worked out how to use it yet... Only wish I'd known about the PT8200 before the Oregon...Family_Dog wrote:Val, I think I should have sold you the Kirisun PT8200 radio rather. Built-in GPS! ;)

So Stephan we may have to have some Oregon training this weekend.
Also woke up to find a large pool of water on the floor of the garage under my Hilux this morning, around about where the radiator is so just as well we are off to Hoppy in an hour because would have had some serious problems on route I imagine. Had to put in about 2 litres of water into the radiator. Anyway I am packed only need to load the cooler box, have a shower, load camera bags and I'm on my way... See you guys later this afternoon.. Drive safely, we just have to get there, and not in record time..

Re: 4x4 Camping Weekend;13 - 15 January 2012;BergKraal-Vrede
Wow wee that was a serious, serious trail... But first I have to thank a whole load of people....Thanks Hoppy for being the star you always are, and for sorting my radiator out in double quick time so that I could be on the road by 9.30. Had no problems with my vehicle at all. Thanks to Stephan and Bernadette for arranging the whole weekend and for working so hard at making it an amazing success. Thanks to my fellow drivers and their spouses for the great time together, and I am still awed by the camaraderie that exists in our 4x4 community. Johan, Koos and Martin (the locals who joined us) thanks for joining us and all the valuable things you taught me about driving in your backyards. It was great to meet you all. The last thanks is to Frikkie van Zyl the owner of Bergkraal, who really is "sout van die aarde" guy. He took us through the trail and was as excited as each of us when we succeeded at an obstacle and guided us through the entire trail. He recovered many of the guys quite a number of times. He has the patience of a saint and the enthusiasm of a child at a fun park. He made us feel so very, very welcome and went out of his way to make the weekend enjoyable for us... I think the other guys may also have something to say about that phenomenal man.
The trail has some serious obstacles a some of which there was no way in heaven or hell that I was going to attempt them. Even the alternate sections where not for sissies at times. I reckon anyone with a yearning for Extreme 4x4 should go and attempt the trail and do all the obstacles... A very wide variety of driving conditions. From very hot soft sand and lots of that to some hairy rocky sections going up to the top of the mountain...
I know, photo's need to crop and resize and will have them up soon..

Re: 4x4 Camping Weekend;13 - 15 January 2012;BergKraal-Vrede
It would'nt have, and I seriously would have walked most of the trail as a passenger... these guys wives have some serious b......s... The rocky section where I don't have any photo's unfortunately was hectic... tested my hilux and me to my limit.. one section is called the crocodiles back. Also no photo's of the sand section and the dunes, also very challenging. Frikkie has done some fantastic stuff with that trail. He is a very enthusiastic 4x4 driver himself and so has gone to tons of effort to create a very diverse trail... It is a very long trail with lots for everyone. He even has a speed section with a track in sand with tight corners where you can race around that. I reckon to make the most of the trail one needs to do it in 2 days, as there is enough to keep one driving comfortably for 2 days. Especially when you have a number of tries to get through an obstacle or needing to be recovered. So theoretically one should take a 4 day long weekend. Drive up on a Friday, do the trail Sat and Sun, and a leisurely drive home on Monday.ThysdJ wrote:Lekker!! Well done Val, seems like you had a good time... How would the Clio have done?

Re: 4x4 Camping Weekend;13 - 15 January 2012;BergKraal-Vrede
Hi all
Yes, was a AWSOME weekend! And thanks to everyone that joined! Wouldn't have been the same without any of you! And also, I can only repeat what I said last time: Frikkie is LEGEND Both on the trail, and then going above and beyond afterwards sourcing parts for repairs If this was the army, then he earned a medal!!!
A bit about the weekend. Friday was very relaxed. We had a braai and Frikking was kind enough to to let us use his guest house for the kuiers. Friday morning we were up nice ond early (7 is early for me!!!). Everyone had some coffee and breakfast, and then we we're off for the trail. I got us a little lost on the way, but not too bad When we got to the start of the trail, we just waited for a few of the locals, and then we were off.
Frikkie was nice enough to fill the "Padda-Gat" with a couple of thousand liters of water before hand when I skimped for a bit of mud the week before. Needless to say, I couldn't get through it. I was the first in and the first to get towed
Gerrie gave it a good try, but also had to be towed.
Then SwartVark decided to show us how it's done!!
Although it cost him his alternator . . .
The Range Rover came next, but had some engine problems and ended up going home. From there we went on to the second (dry) hole, and everyone who tried made it through
A bit on and we had a bit of nice technical driving. See Val's pics: Eroded dry river bed.jpg and 2012Jan14_0345.jpg (That second part was a lot more fun than it looks on the picture ).
Then on we went. When we came to another dry river that we first drove "wydsbeesn" (see Val's Drive river bed and lots of axle twisters.jpg) and then over a wooden logs bridge.
We then started the rocky climb over the mountain. It's there that Swartvark's battery said it had enough.
We had to jump start him a coule of times to get him over the mountain, but ended up having to leave Swartvark behind and had Tiaan and Muis klimb over to Captain Awesome. We were a bit behind schedule by then so we decided to skip the rocky part of the trail.
We then had some nice drag racing on the strip, but I forgot to take it out of low range before we started and ended quite behind some of the rest :wth:
After that the terrain changed to sand. It started with a couple of camel backs and then we did the circle track for time
From here the sand got very difficult with a series of dune challenges, and even the "ompad" at some of them were quite difficult. Especially driving out of the sand area at the end.
Some pics of the sand section:
To be continued . . .

Re: 4x4 Camping Weekend;13 - 15 January 2012;BergKraal-Vrede
So on we went to the Boesman Grot for a lekker braai for lunch. Frikkie's son had driven out ahead to start the fire for us so when we got there, we could start braaing immediately
Some of us also took a ride on Frikkie's 300m foofie slide
And then on we went to the EKSTRA lekker part of the trail A series of extreme obstacles build agains the side of a hill. The first one or two obstacles was a nice warmup for the ones that came after. See Val's an obstacle I definitely avoided.jpg for one. I didn't make that log ladder last time, and I didn't make it this time either. THAT is the ONE obstacle I'm really scared of to be honest. I gave it two tries, but then my nerves reached its limit and decided to let it go for now (There's alway next time). The next hole was also very challenging and also very famous for breaking vehicles. See Val's one of the locals at an obstacle.jpg and Frikkie's excitement at the drivers success.jpg. I couldn't attemp that obstacle the last time we were there, so I jumped at the chance when i got it again!
It took us a couple of tries, but me and my new co-pilot Tiaan made it to the top
Next came one of my favourites. See Val's Frikkie demonstrating how to drive that obstacle.jpg
I'll load a video later showing just how quickly an accident can happen. I picked up a little to much speed going down, the Hilux started to slide, and then it was over. All I could do then was to floor it so that we didn't end up on our roof From inside the Hilux I could just see Frikkie diving for the side and then I instantly knew I was in trouble. But we came through it fine luckily. But I can promise you I'll be A LOT more careful next time!!!
So on we went. We were still a bit behind and skipped a bit more of the trail. Then again the terrain changed to a fine white gravel, changing the game again. A bit of ups and downs on the trail, one VERY STEEP downhill Axle twister, and we came to another obstacle that's famous for breaking vehicles. That specific one has claimed two of Frikkies front axles if I'm not mistaken.
But we made it up, no problem
On our way out of that little detour is when I ended up a bit on my side. See Val's Heard the wives screaming in the car as it went to rest on its side.jpg. I had no idea they screamed that loud But I must admit. It was worse than it looks on the photo. I had grass in my face trying to drive out and Tiaan had to klimb "hande vier voet" out of the Hilux to go scout ahead. I managed to reverse out luckily. We just took a wrong turn somewhere . . .
The pics I have end here again, sorry!
It's at that obstacle that Gerrie's water pump seized and one of the local's was nice enough to tow him home from there. The rest of us went on. The river that I had a blast in last time was dry this time and there was also some more obstacles, dirt mostly. It was dry (last time I was there it was wet and winter) so it was a bit easier than last time. But still fun!!! I drove the obstacles to the very end, and then it was time to go home :alvarin: All good things must come to an end I guess . . .
We had a lekker kuier en braai that evening and some of the locals joind us for a drink or 3  After having gotten up early that morning, and the hectic whole day trail, we were all moeg and in bed by 1.
The next morning we were all baked out of our tents as the day was well on its way to 44 degrees!!!!! Frikkie was there at 8 already with a replacement water pump that he organised in town and a new battery for SwartVark. Like I said, Frikke deserves a medal! While Gerrie started replacing his pump, Frikke took Tiaan to go fetch SwartVark from where he had slept in the bush that night.
After they got back, the rest of us took out the Cadac's and started a lekker breakfast for everyone. Bacon, eggs, sausage, tomato, mushroom, onions . . . Yum!!!!!! Frikkie and Gerrie only got a late breakfast when they were done replacing the water pumps.
It was VERY slow going in the heat and packing up took 3 times longer than usual. We only ended up leaving at two.
Once again, a great weekend!!!!
Thanks everyone!!!!

Here is the video as promised
This is how it should be done:
And this just shows how quickly an accident can happen.
THE UPLOADED VIDEO IS A BIT BLURRY, BUT TIAAN'S JUST SMILING

When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

- donasies welkom!)

That would probably be my only criticism of Bergkraal is the very barren campsite. Definitely a better option if there are 3 couples to share the house, and if there are more, I would recommend accommodation elsewhere in the area. It was very, very hot but we were fortunate that Frikkie allowed us to use the house facilities for the weekend free of charge because it was not booked out. We woke up to cooking temp in our tents early in the morning already...If we had thought about it we should not even have pitched tents just stayed in the house....

Hey Guys... ie Sidekick, Gerrie and Swartvark,
Have just received a call from Koos one of the local guys that drove the trail with us, to say he is in the area and is dropping off 4 cases of their local wine for us to sample. 1 box for each of us as a gift from him and Johan. And he also thanked us for visiting them and driving the trail with them..... Gee, what amazing people in that part of the world... So Swartvark you are around the corner from me so you are sorted, just need to make a plan for Sidekick and Gerrie to get their wine.....
Thanks Koos and Johan.

Hi Tiaan
Now that I think about it, Bergkraal was the first time I put my new Mikem suspension through its paces. What's your opinion on it? It's difficult for me to rate it as ANYTHING is better than my previous one!!!
