Atlantis Dunes WC GTG, 2nd June 2012
There is a club GTG at Atlantis Dunes on the 2nd June 2012. We will be meeting at gate1 at 8 a.m. sharp. Please will you place your names on the list if you would like to join us.... Please don't forget to get your permits during the week, as the permit office in Atlantis is only open on the 1st Sat of the month.
Atlantis dunes is up the West Coast. Nearest town: Atlantis Co-ordinates : -33.567010, 18.494450 The easiest route to get there is via the R27 towards Langebaan, and turn right at the R307 Atlantis sign. Travel a short distance and on the left hand side of the road you will find the entrance of Gate 1 to the dunes. We will meet there to deflate tyres, hand in permits and then go for some fun in the dunes. Bring a flask of coffee to drink while we wait for everyone to arrive. It will probably be pretty cold early in the morning, so bring warm clothes... Please be on time.. The trail: Just a big sandpit

4. Jamiel
5. Bees

Re: Atlantis Dunes GTG, 2nd June 2012
Here's the deal. I just spoke to Gerrie van Eeden from Wegry. He wants to do a Sand Driving article for the Drive-out/Wegry magazine, and he will join us on this outing. So chances are you might get your mug in the book.
Team Offroad would have done Phase 1 4x4 Training in Atlantis anyway on this date, but it has been cancelled due to lack of interest, and also availability of my fellow instructors. Both the buggers are on tour!! To that end I will present the training to this group free of charge.
If you forward me you vehicle registration nr by close of business on Wednesday, I will go and pick up a permit for you onThursday morning.
Join us for this outing, it can be a lot of fun.
Thanks Val for organising..

Why you always go play when I'm working?????????
Can I suggest a three night mid-week camp out somewhere!!!!!!!
If one can celebrate 'Christmas in July' why not a 'weekend in the middle of the week' weekend???????

Wak, most people wak in the week... If there are enough people to do a week "weekend", I think it's a great idea... Campsites will not be overcrowded, booking won't be a problem, but not sure if there are enough to warrant it... maybe worth looking into it....zepplin wrote:Why you always go play when I'm working?????????

Re: Atlantis Dunes WC GTG, 2nd June 2012
If you are still thinking about Atlantis Dunes on the 2nd June, please remember that you need to factor in getting the permits, and Thys needs your details before Thursday morning when he is going to collect them. Not only do you have an opportunity for a great day in the dunes, with what I see appears to be great weather, but this includes free training and the possibility of getting your mug in the Wegry, or maybe just your vehicle in the mag...

Re: Atlantis Dunes WC GTG, 2nd June 2012
There is a club GTG at Atlantis Dunes on the 2nd June 2012. We will be meeting at gate1 at 8 a.m. sharp. Please will you place your names on the list if you would like to join us.... Please don't forget to get your permits during the week, as the permit office in Atlantis is only open on the 1st Sat of the month. For those of you that are unable to get your own permits, please could you contact Thys before Thursday and he will be able to arrange a permit for you.. You can send him a PM if you would like him to arrange a permit for you.. Thys will be on hand to assist with sand driving tips and tricks.... Some free training for those that are'nt familiar with sand dune driving
1. Val
2. Petou
3. Petou 2
4. Jamiel
5. Bees
6. Zak
7. Petou 3
8. Francois
9. Roche
Really hope to see as many of you at the event as possible...
Thanks

Re: Atlantis Dunes WC GTG, 2nd June 2012
So Thys is really sick with Bronchitis and is not going to join us on Saturday... That's the bad news, the good news is that we will be in the very capable care of Petou, who will be leading us... Must confess that I get horribly lost in the Dunes, but he knows them well. Thanks Petou, really appreciate you helping us out... I will be arranging the permits for Zak, Jamiel, Petou and myself, so if anyone else is planning on joining us, please organize your permits and meet us at Gate 1 at 8 a.m. Bring along some coffee to warm you up early in the morning, and some picnic type lunch to eat somewere in the dunes and your own refreshments.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Atlantis Dunes WC GTG, 2nd June 2012
I don't need a permit as I have a hypothetical key that I open a hypothetical lock and drive through a hypothetical gate.
Relax guys, I only drive on the dunes with a permit.
Not able to make this one due to financial constraints, have to register at UNISA for my second semester.
But will try and skurral some cash some where for the 16 of June 2012.

Re: Atlantis Dunes WC GTG, 2nd June 2012
Mark the day was amazing, and I have photo's to load but will do that tomorrow.. But once again so amazed by the camaraderie that the people in the group showed....
Petou... Mr Gotoguy...Dankie dat jy so n staatmaker is, dat jy besluit het om saam to kom en van jou pelle saamgebring... He lead the group through the dunes, in his usual competent manner.. A number of his friends, also experienced 4x4 drivers joined us and assisted us throughout the day.... Thanks Francois, in your Landy, Heinrich in your Amorak, and Burger and Elsabe in the Pajero... To the rest of the group the Hilux members that were there, Zak, Ian, Jamiel and Cindy thanks for a making it such a special day in the dunes... Zak landed up playing the role of mechanic, Ian showed us just how competent a Hilux can be, and Jamiel and Cindy's first trip to the dunes turned out to be an adventure, I am sure they won't forget it in a hurry..
The sand was very damp, and I know there are some people that believe that it is easier driving in wet dunes, but I beg to differ. Instead of gliding on top of the sand, you tend to get bogged down and it is much heavier going. I did'nt manage to get over 2 of the higher dunes I have comfortably managed before. My tyres were clogged with sand, so there was little traction and got bogged down in deep ridges formed by previous vehicles. Also found the ridges in the previous vehicle tracks caused a lot of bouncing and loss of momentum. The guys suggested later that I should have pushed the rpm to way over 6500 to get through, but must confess the sound of a screaming engine with a needle way into the red, in LR2 is something I have to learn to get used to. I attempted those obstacles about 10 times and was distraught when I would just reach the top and then run out of momentum, and just could not make it over.... Zak and Francois came to Jamiels rescue, very early in the day, when his vehicle was not engaging 4 wd, so they repaired it right there in the dunes, so they could continue to enjoy the day....
For me, the whole experience is about getting together with new and familiar faces, putting our vehicles through their paces to the best of their and our abilities and having a whole load of fun doing it. That is exactly how the day was for me...
Once again from me, thank you to everyone of you that were part of the group today.. You all contributed to make it a memorable occasion...
We had some other Hilux forum members join us when we stopped for a llunch, I believe they saw my GI Jane spare wheel and decided to join us. Sorry I forgot your name, but please next time why don't you put your name on the list and join us for the day, it was great getting to chat to you for a while...

Re: Atlantis Dunes WC GTG, 2nd June 2012
The view towards the dunes when Zak and I arrived at 7.30... Very misty and cold, warm jackets and hot coffee, were called for...
Once everyone one had arrived we went through the gate.. The group for the day.. We tackled our first obstacle and it became apparent that Jamiel's Hilux was not going to go anywhere fast, because he could'nt engage 4wd... Salvation came in the form of Francois (who drives a Hilux friendly Landrover) and Zak my fellow Hilux crew member and repaired the vehicle so that Jamiel and Cindy were able to continue to drive their vehicle. It was their first 4x4 outing and I was so happy they were able to enjoy the rest of the day with us...
Back in our vehicles and time to conquer the dunes.. or in my case fail to conquer the serious ones...

Re: Atlantis Dunes WC GTG, 2nd June 2012
Burger and Elsabe driving a Hilux friendly Pajero,
and Petou Gotoguy...
The dune I never conquered, which Petou showed me could be done... Ja, whatever....(must admit he had about 15 attempts although with a very short runup)
Bees had a very good day, him and his Hilux loved the sand.. and decided to drive a number of the dunes in 4x2, missed some photos of the good wheel spins
So while we were braaing and having lunch Burger decided to bury the Amarok... think the competition might have been a bit tough...
He had to recover it afterwards, so all ended well......
Anyway once again thanks to all of you that attended.. I thoroughly enjoyed my day... Thanks Petou for leading the group so well, thanks to Francois, Heinrich and Burger that came to assist and enjoy the day... and to my fellow Hilux forum friends, Zak, Jamiel and Ian, that drove so well and made it a very good day in the dunes.... Hope we all get to drive together again soon...

Lekker report and pics Val ..... the dunes will still be there next time!
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Hi everyone.
Ja it was great fun as always.
My bakkie was a bit heavy on juice, I first thought it was because of all the wheel spinning but later found that there was a tear in the pipe going from my long range tank to the standard tank. So it was a bit of an expensive day, but worth it.
Thanks everyone

Glad to hear you guys enjoyed it. Pity I couldnt be there, but the Ford doesnt have wipers on the inside of the windscreen.
Wet sand is easy Val.. just get the tyre pressures right.. and L2 is too low for that dune... At least 1H will give you ample momentum to get over the top...

Maybe it was with "fond" memories that it was a psychological block...

Thanks for a lekker day in the dunes, had heaps of fun so did Tokkie. Unfortunately Sunday someone dicided to buy her and take her to the Land of plenty sand. Hope she will love it there. Val thanks for organizing really was one of the best outings I had in a long while. Jamiel its a big pleasure hope you get the beast up and running soon let us know what the real problem was please.
