Proposal for Cub Camp at Lory Park Zoo and Owl Sanctuary

Post by DougN »

Some time ago I was approached by a 4x4community member to see if there was any way we could help Lory Park Zoo going forward.

I met with them and after some discussion etc we have another organisation that we will assist with projects on an ongoing basis.

Lory Park Zoo and Owl Sanctuary was started ten years ago and are situated in Midrand .The Park has taken in injured, confiscated and neglected wildlife. In the last few years the zoo has had a huge success with breeding of endangered cats like the South American Ocelot and Tigers amongst other animals. Lory Park Zoo has both Bengal and Siberian tigers and is committed to educating the public about the plight of these amazing cats. The Zoo is also home to a number of endangered animals from around the world and of course, from South Africa.

In recent years the Zoo has expanded and is growing. The Zoo is a privately owned and relies on entrance fees, sponsorships and donations to be able to develop. Space for cubs and kittens, off display, is now needed. Babies are hand reared in our baby room, but they need to go outside for natural sunlight during the day, this cub camp needs to be restricted to staff only while the babies are building up their immune system.

The area that the camp is to be developed on offers shade, sunlight and grass and is going to be two enclosures, 3m x 9m with one safety cage for both in front.

The project will kick off in early August, they are currently clearing the space, and we are looking for volunteers to help build the enclosures to keep costs down for them and then sponsorship of some of the items required to build the enclosures.

If you are interested in helping out with this project, please send me an email with your contact details so that I can get a roster/list going.

The break down of the materials needed and the cost is as follows:

Hi All,

Herewith an update on the Lory Park Zoo project.

The project will involve the building of a new enclosure to house the young out of the public eye while they develop their immune systems.

At this point we have 9 volunteer families and promises of cement and nails as per the list. There is still a long list of items that we need.

Hi Mark,

Waiting for a response from LPZ with dates, they needed to clear an area first and originally wanted to start building during August.
