Rain spider (?)

What with snakes 'and-all, found this beauty this morning.
Am I correct in saying it is a rain spider - Palysters sp.

We have quite a number of these things in the house ... in tanks of course (son's hobby).

Here's a pic of one, not the biggest although it's about 120mm across, but one of the nicest colourings.

Spiders are cool, they kill flies and mozziez. I have one in my kitchen as a flytrap. I get a bit nervouse when I dont see the little chap in his web.

As long as they stay on yor side of town Im happy. Had a night adder in the kitchen the other day. did not know a pregnant woman could move and jump so high as that day.

I'm not too thrilled about it myself .... even though they are in tanks. These things are damn fast, and accidents can happen. I'm not going to try catch one if it escapes. :shifty: That bugger in the pic has fangs that are about 1 cm long, thank you very much!

What type of spider is that? I wont go to Sydney, Australia just because of the funnel web spider.

Sydney Funnel-web Spider
Atrax robustus

Males of this large, aggressive, Australian species have the most toxic venom of all spiders. Painful bites can release a neurotoxin that could kill a person within 15 minutes; quick treatment with anti-venom can prevent fatalities.
This spider stands on its hind legs and strikes down with its huge fangs that can penetrate shoes and toe nails. It then gets stuck that it has to be removed by hand, but by then it is too late as poisen is in the victim and the rest is history.

I'm obviously not the one that's into spiders, but my son refers to it as a "Curly Hair" (Tarantula family) ... apparently they originate in South America ... can't remember if he said Columbia or elsewhere.

Sydney funnel spider:

The venom contains a low molecular weight toxin called atraxtoxin which attacks the nerves of the body causing thousands of electrical impulses to be fired down them.
All the evidence suggests that the effects wear off after a few hours. Provided the victim reaches hospital before serious illness has developed, he or she has an excellent chance of recovery. An antivenom to the venom of the Funnel-web Spider became available in 1980 and no deaths have been recorded since the introduction of the antivenom.

As for the spider doing the following – well that is probably an Aussie urban legend:

Come the rainy season the Rain spiders come out, strange that

Just last night at about 11:30 my son came through to the bedroom and told his mother that there was a spider crawling on his wall and it was "thiiiiiiiiissssssss Biggggggg" (he is 6)

So of course I got dragged out of bed to go see what was going on and trues bob, there on the wall was another rain spider.

I say another as they are common in my household much to my wifes disgust as she was met with one not 2 weeks ago whilst opening the curtains.

Fortunately they are not fatal to us and they are easy enought to catch and relocate and I reckon it is more the look of them that frightens us.
