What Snake (3) Crossed marked Whip Snake
This baby did not want to pose for a photograph so I had to catch it in order to photograph.
It is only about 5mm thick and 20cm long.
Any ideas what it is?

Ja nee, this one I don't know either ... the only one close to that which I'm familiar with is the "skaapsteker", but still looks quite different.

Re: What Snake (3)

Re: What Snake (3)
baie nice links Pieter. Sal kyk vir foto of probeer een vang. Sal nou ook die naam wil weet.

Re: What Snake (3)

http://www.sareptiles.co.za/forum/viewt ... 46#p183846That snake is part of the Psammophis gensus that of Sand/whip snakes. In particular that is Crossed marked Whip Snake Psammophis crucifer. They are quite common and are mildly venomous but wont cause a person much of a problem.

Re: What Snake (3) Crossed marked Whip Snake
Yep, I think that nails it, Pieter! I saw photos earlier of whip snakes that had the similar markings on the head, but no stripes and I wondered if it was of the same species. Not found in my area. Quite beautiful actually.

Re: What Snake (3) Crossed marked Whip Snake

Re: What Snake (3) Crossed marked Whip Snake
That idea works perfectly, but the rope must be quite thick ..... both for stiffness and for not 'cutting' into the snake and hurting it as you mentioned. Ideal would be if the doubled rope takes up more or less the full inside diameter of the pipe so that there is no room for the snake's body / neck to be pulled into the pipe. It's also a good idea to heat the end of the PVC pipe and flare it while it's soft. This makes it much smoother to operate as well.
